A girl’s best friend
Obsession. For the first time, I think my daughter has it.
And thankfully, it is not for a boy. Well, not a human one at least.
Several weeks ago, our family rented the Disney movie Bolt On Demand. For those who have not seen it, the premise is about a little girl who loses her dog name Bolt, who happens to play a superhero dog on a TV show. Only, he has no idea he really isn’t a superhero with super powers until he is lost in the real world
Since that movie night, it has been pure madness.
Every waking moment of the day, my daughter pretends she has a dog name Bolt. Since Dadisodes decided to bring home two other Disney plush animals from his trip to California, I turned one of her bajillion existing stuffed animals into an improvised Bolt, complete with a collar and lightening streak.

Apparently, this turned the madness into an obsession.
She wants to take the furry white dog everywhere. She talks to him, sleeps with him, sings to him, plays plush toy fetch with him. They are attached at the hip at every moment. Despite the stuffed animal haven in her bedroom, and our real live dog, she calls this makeshift pup her new best friend.
And I can see why.
Bolt spends the entire movie trying to find his way back to his owner Penny. She is an adorable little girl, and an only child. But with Bolt, she is never alone. They are truly the best of friends, constant companions, and he would do anything to protect her.
I imagine this is why she giggles and darts around the house with her Bolt tucked in her arms.
Perhaps he helps her days seem less lonesome, her spirit more adventurous. Hopeful.
She made a confession during a playdate last week. While standing in a circle of three friends dressed up as princesses, they each took turns holding a magic wand to make a wish.
She cupped her tiny palms and whispered in my ears, “I wished really, really hard for a baby sister, mommy.”
Tears welled in my eyes, but I stifled any from falling.
She has no idea we have been trying, hoping, and wishing endlessly for the same.
Until then, all I can do is tuck her and her Bolt into my arms and run around the house smiling.
And somehow, with much hope, still keep the dream alive.

my son loves bolt too!
and…hugs.

That must have been such a tough moment…if only she could understand how hard you are trying to give her one! She will though, someday.
Until then, I will keep praying for you!

Gah! Hugs for the wish.
I totally get the obsession. My oldest daughter has one with Penguins and Buzz Lightyear. Ariel is a close 3rd, but Buzz and a Penguin, ANY penguin, makes her happiest.

I hope and pray you all get your wish! I think every child has an obsession with something. My son’s is Wall-E, my oldest daughter can’t get enough of Captain Underpants (yes, Captain Underpants – a series of books by Dav Pilkey) and the baby must have her Minnie Mouse ballerina doll with her at all times.

My baby girl loves Bolt, too! She watches it every night before she goes to sleep, and she’ll finish the whole thing before she goes to dreamland. She even knows what Penny will say next. And I kinda like the lyrics “There is no home like the one you’ve got, ’cause that home belongs to you..”
You are quite creative with the Bolt poodle.
Happy birthday to Babisodes! I wish that her wish and your wish will come true.

We haven’t seen BOLT yet, but from the sounds of it we need to! Reagan already has a pink puppy that is NEVER out of her hands. Well, maybe when she takes a bath, but that is just about the only time!
My eyes welled up as well when I read Babisode’s wish…

What a beautiful story. We haven’t seen Bolt yet but it sounds like a wonderful movie.
I hope and wish for you and your daughter that she gets a little sister too. We had a hard time conceiving our second child so our oldest wished on the first star she saw every night that she would get a baby sister. She got her wish so your daughter could very well get hers.

Jonathan is a huge fan of Bolt. So far he only carries around Spiderman dolls and pretends he is Iron Man, but who knows if we will soon have a Bolt dog too. A sweet post and I hope the “other stuff” works out soon! (You have to know by now I’m praying for you to reach your dream of having another baby!)

So sweet! Ali has a stuffed animal obsession too, except that we have thirty dozen ones, of which we must debate over which two she can take to bed with her each night.
And she’s right there with Babisodes on the Baby Sister thing. This morning, the first thing she said when I went to get her out of bed is, “When is my Baby Sister coming?”
Yikes.
