Sew behind

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I’m not sure if I am trying to keep my mind off things or if some strange form of nesting is setting in.

Perhaps both.

Because in just the past week, I went from having absolutely nothing prepared for the baby, to a bedroom full of clothes and gear.

I even ordered an infant car seat today.

However, don’t let this fool you.  There are still eleventy billion things to get done before the baby arrives, and I have barely made a dent in the list.

Baby steps though, right?

This time around I am more concerned about preparing Babisodes for the months ahead.  I want to take full advantage of these final weeks where it is just the two of us at home, since I am fully aware that time will be tight once the baby is here.

I have feverishly be working on projects that have sat on the back burner for months.  Mainly craft items that I hope will keep Babisodes happily occupied in the coming weeks.

Project #1- Turn my daughter into a superhero.

As much as I love her Disney Princess dress up gear (insert heavy sarcastic tone), I figured why not use up some of the fabric scraps laying around and let her transform into Supergirl, a Wonder Pet, or Word Girl.  Perhaps she can save the day and fetch me a TWIX diaper from another room.

Project #2- Save the world, one pee/poo-ing baby doll at a time.

Last month, I blogged about how Santa was bringing a Baby Alive for Christmas.  So as a follow up, I will report that Babisodes really loves her!  Her first bottle and piddle in the provided disposable diaper was quite the event on Christmas day.  However, there is no way on earth I will be purchasing diapers for a REAL newborn plus a battery operated one.

Not to mention, the plastic baby will never be allowed to have the “special” juice they advertise.  It turns the pee brownish. I’m sure there will be plenty of real poop to go around soon enough.

So rather than filling our landfills with overpriced, pretend pee diapers, I decided to sew some cloth ones to save a few bucks…and the environment.

I followed this baby doll diaper pattern, but made sure to add a strip of terry cloth (I just cut up a face towel) to the center to absorb the pretend piddle, which is thankfully just water when you avoid the “special” juice.

Then Babisodes can just line dry them to use again. Yay!

Now maybe this will buy me some time to finish some projects for the real baby.
