Just when I thought I would be pregnant forever.

The little girl not only heard me, but she came out with a vengeance to show me what’s up.

Allow me to apologize in advance for not Tweeting, posting, or e-mailing this announcement sooner.

But I’ve been a bit busy.

Ya know, having a baby and all.

This past weekend I went from a meager 2-centimeters dilated to pushing out a 7-pound kid in less time than it takes the cheap Chinese bus to drive from New York City to Boston.

If I was uncertain if I would ever have another child, I am now 100% clear on my decision.

Ain’t no way.

I fear that if I ever go into labor again, there’s a chance I’ll make the 11 o’clock news for birthing a baby in a Wendy’s bathroom stall after consuming an X-large chili at lightening speed.

I’ll have to go into the nightmarish gory details about my labor and delivery process another time.

So without further ado, allow me to introduce the newest addition to the ’sodes family.

Babisodes 2.0*

Is she not the sweetest little orange-y faced baby ever?

She is sporting quite a Glow-worm look due to elevated jaundice.  As a result she is sun-bathing under phototherapy in the hospital for another day or two.

So you’ll have to pardon my absence for a bit while I bask in the glow for a few more days.

I’ll be around, but just not as much. I am suffering from extreme-sleep-deprived-new-mom-delirium.

Besides, I have a few more days worth of pain meds and Colace.  Thank GOD for Colace!

Almost every night this week I’ve had long, vivid dreams.  Not the kind that feel as if they lasted for hours, when in fact, it had been only a few minutes.

My sleep pattern has evolved into the usual 9-month pregnancy state where I naturally wake up every 2-3 hours for no reason whatsoever in preparation of what’s to come.

And every time I fall back to sleep, my dreams would continue where they left off.

Throughout the night, I have a string of dream sequences that feel as real as the stack of pillows beneath my cheek.

Every single one has been about an ex-boyfriend.  Not the assholes, but the ones who were kind.  The ones I came to love once upon a time and still hold fond memories of.

My guess is that I’m subconsciously reaching back for their affection.  Or back when I was younger, thinner; a time when I exuded more confidence and smiles.

But also, maybe because as of late, Dadisodes seems even more distant than those times.

I suppose I can’t blame him.

I am sure it is intimidating for anyone to wrap their head around all of the changes that lie ahead… as well as their arms around someone so large.

38.5 weeks pregnant

But I don’t feel an ounce of guilt.

It’s not like I went out to dinner with them or anything.

I’m going to cry.

Or polish off a quart of Breyers mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Every time I’m asked.

Anyway, the past couple of days have been a bit rough.

I went from having contractions every 10-15 minutes, to every 5 minutes. Many of them quite strong and painful.  This has happened everyday since Friday, lasting for a few hours on and off.

By the end of each day I feel like I’ve run a marathon because of the constant contractions and breathlessness.

This is definitely not how things unfolded with Babisodes four years ago.  With her, I had mild contractions for a few days, my water broke, and once I couldn’t bear the pain any longer, we swung by Panda Express on the way to the hospital so I could grab a bite to eat (since I knew they wouldn’t feed me until after she was born).

This time around, my body wants me to suffer.

I finally called my doctor today to get myself checked out, and I am a whopping two centimeters dilated.

If you are unfamiliar with the stages of labor, 2 cm’s is not a big deal. At least not for the activity that I’ve had recently.  Most hospitals admit woman when they are about 4 cm’s or if their water has broken.  A baby is delivered at 10 cm’s.

By this time during my last pregnancy, I had already been 3 cm’s for over a week (with little to no pain), and it took another week and a half before my daughter was born.

If this kid wants to cook inside for another week or so, fine.

But enough with the bluffing already.

37.5 weeks

Drops of water sit firmly, hanging onto the windshield. Little beads squeezed from the clouds, each barely missing the chance to remain a snowflake due to the 35F degree temperatures outside.

A gentle right turn sends them swaying to one side.

Despite their wobbling, they remain standing, tiny prisms refracting my life.

But they rarely last. Just as the soft tapping of the raindrops lulls me into a heavy-eyed trance, I reach a Stop sign.  My foot hits the brakes and everything lurches forward.  In one fell swoop, a crashing wave from the roof washes every last bead of water away.

Lately, by 5pm, I always stumble upon a Stop sign. Every fiber of my body responsible for keeping me vertical collapses, and I fall into a pile of goo.

Apparently lugging around an extra two dozen pounds all day while chasing a 4-year old, running errands, and climbing the house stairs, is finally taking it’s toll.

I have been mentally writing this post since Sunday, but not until today have I been able to muster the energy to string two sentences together.

So in these final weeks, while I struggle to stay awake, please know that I am still here, only slower, more cautious.

I’m just carrying a heavy load.

Last week I went through a frenzied get-the-hell-outta-way-of-the-vacuum-and-Magic Eraser-phase.

It was an unhealthy combination of nesting and preparing for Chinese New Year. There are all sorts of crazy superstitious consequences I don’t need looming over my head in case I accidentally washed my hair or bought new shoes. Besides, no one else was going to do the chores.

So by Saturday night, the house was shiny and everyone’s hair was freshly cut.

Including the dog.

And after the fury of preparing for Chinese New Year died down, my body began to throw a tantrum.

Although I may have thwarted some possible hocus-pocus misfortune, my efforts initiated a full day of contractions. A solid twenty-four hours of intense tightening and pressure.

By 4am on the way to the loo (for the tenth time that night), I glanced across the hall at the nursery and noticed my hospital overnight bag lying on the ground.

It was still empty. Well, minus the 3 Musketeers. Which is still there thankyouverymuch.

So I spent yesterday afternoon meticulously picking out items to pack I know will be absolutely necessary while in the hospital. Just in case.

I think I am set, but I think a certain someone seems a little worried.

The moment I finished packing the suitcase, our dog parked himself beside it.

He didn’t move from there for hours. He just sat in the room alone, moping until after the sun went down.

I know he knows I’m pregnant. In fact, I think he knew before I did. But I wonder if he remembers what this all means. He’s been down this road before.

Another new little person moving in, another little person who pulls, grabs, and screams, and who will eventually just outsize him.

Could explain some of his white hair.

*What did you pack in your overnight bag?  Any suggestions?  I’ve already packed the basics (toiletries, Pj’s, maternity and baby clothes, etc).  I’ve also included an extra baby blanket to get the baby’s scent on it, so that Dadisodes can bring it home for the dog to smell.

**Yes, there is  still plastic wrapping around the crib mattress.  I’ll get to taking it off soon…eventually…I think.
