…Once upon a time, there was a girl named Sandy. She lived in Miami, Florida, where there were many, many other little girls that were nothing like her. You see Sandy was tall, very tall; taller than every girl and BOY in her class. She was even taller than some of her own teachers. This did not bode well for her popularity or social life at school. So in a poor attempt to blend in, or look “cool” she made many obnoxious, and often embarrassing, decisions about her appearance.

She wore slouchy, multicolored colored socks in layers, always matching the colors of her outfit and headband. She woke up hours before school to labor over her delicate bangs that needed constant teasing and massive amounts of hairspray to reach its ultimate height. And while at school, her and her other un-popular gal pals swore up and down that their multicolored friendship bracelets would keep them B.F.F’s and would never take them off, even if it risked a bit of mildew exposure and a rash.

Among this circle of awkward, adolescent outcasts, Sandy shared her deepest, darkest love secrets and desires. There were a select group of young men that made her nearly ovulating ovaries quiver at just a glimpse of their adorable faces.

Behold!…….(drum roll)……….

The Top 5 Heartthrobs:

kirkcameron

Kirk Cameron, a.k.a. Mike Seaver from the 80’s sitcom Growing Pains. Although his character portrayed him as a trouble-making son, he is now a partner in an evangelical Christian ministry (go figure). Sandy could never get enough of his crooked smile, inside out “ID” shirts, and head bopping coolness.

matthew broderick

Matthew Broderick- “Anyone? Anyone?……….Bueller?… Bueller?… Bueller?” Does this adorable creature really need an explanation? Sandy’s husband actually bears a striking resemblance to Ferris. Even the white t-shirt and pastey complexion. Could be quite possibly why she married him.

colormebadd

Sam Watters (one of the momentary lapses of better judgment): “To the tic-toc, you don’t stop….” Color Me Cah-razy! Not sure why,… but homey above on the far left with the curled upper lip like he’s a bad ass with jerry curl, was Sandy’s dreamboat that only stayed afloat because he touched her hand at a concert. She didn’t wash that hand for days….(Cah-razy!).

Their song “I Wanna Sex You Up,” was probably the most lyrically inappropriate song for Sandy, or any girl under the age of 50, to listen to……”Let me take off all your clothes.
We’ll disconnect the phone so nobody knows…..”
–Singing it out loud with her headphones on, not knowing exactly what any of this meant (sort of).

PatrickDempsey

Patrick Dempsey- The nerdy Ronald Miller in Can’t Buy Me Love. Loved him way before dating nerds was ever cool, and way before McDreamy. Some things just get better with age…*sigh*

JordanKnight80s

Jordan Knight: THE MOTHER OF ALL HEARTHROB’S!!
From the boy band New Kids on the Block (N.K.O.T.B)

Oh the braided, long tail (cannot see in photo), his beautiful fingers playing the keyboards, his falsetto voice swooning girls into yearning tears and high pitched screams. Sandy was convinced that Jordan Knight would father all of her children. Despite the fact that he was 7 years her senior, she knew that by the time they had their family, the age gap would merely disappear….

Okay, before you scoff at the hair and rolled up sleeves, take a peek at him now…

JordanKnighttoday

*drool*

I *heart* Jordan Knight 4-Ever!!! (sorry hun, it had to be said)

Whew! *fanning herself from the beads of sweat*

damn gurllllllllllllll… that was sooo COOL!! I can’t believe how many of them I hadn’t thought of in a while… do you also remember:
    Salt N Peppa
    Tiffany
    Madona
MC Hammer ~ him ~ the dance ~ and the pants!!

I have the full Fraggle Rock seasons on DVD for my kids… although I’m sure that Bryan and I love it more then them!! lol

I loved, loved, loved Can’t Buy Me Love… the newer version they came out with is no where close to it! I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have watched that movie… I knew all the words by heart and probably still do.

LOVED Goonies… and really wanted to be one, and/or go on an adventure like they did… and always thought that Bryan, my husband, who I went to school with looked like Brand, some what, back in the day. :)

    Do you also remember:
    Harry & The Henderson’s
    Adventures in Babysitting
    Mannequin

and that is all I can think of for now… besides I’m sure “comment” means only a few words and at the most a few sentences!! (sorry)

    ~hugs~

BTW….Step off! Jordan is mine (hehe) ;)

We were just searching for who sung All 4 Love the other day because it was one of those recent Disney remakes. Color Me Badd! I think Anna may have even downloaded it from iTunes.

Also, we just started saying “baby psyche” whenever Lily offers us a piece of food, then quickly takes it back. She just began to do it about a week ago :)

My sister also adored New Kids. She also called them “NKOTB,” or sometimes just “New K.” I saw them filming a video when I lived in Boston. There were hundreds of girls behind barricades. That’s when I wondered why I wasn’t a professional musician.

Great stuff here! You’re writing style is so fun, its a real pleasure to read. I think if I had been a girl growing up in the 80’s Ferris would have been written over and over on my notebook too. :-)

I find it fascinating the difference between what men and women find attractive. All women need sometimes is a look or an accent, where guys seem to go more for the curves. Not always of course, but still interesting none-the-less.

Your ending list stuff from the 80’s made my day. Thanks for joining in, I really appreciate it!

Thanks for bringing back all those memories, Sandy!

I remember saying Sike and ending sentences with not. What about saying “moded”? =)

  11. jameil1922No Gravatar

i just yelled out SIKE! lolol. how tall are you? i can’t believe you remember mcdreamy before he was. sigh. such foresight!! i was also a huge patrick swayze fan! did you know kirk also has 6 kids or something like that. wow!! could’ve been me and you kirk. me and you. sigh. minus at least 2 of those kids, tho. lol.

  12. sweetisuNo Gravatar

What a fun read :D I admit I giggled throughout the whole thing – as in, I KNOW, ME TOO! kind of giggle. Hehee.

  13. DawnNo Gravatar

I loved Can’t Buy Me Love – even it was depressing that that even the geeky boys got the cheerleader – I never did date much… sigh.

  14. KellyNo Gravatar

Oh my Gosh – I feel your tall girl’s pain. I was so there.

  15. melissaNo Gravatar

oh…i’m so stuck over there, in the 80’s! those were the good ol days!
hey…my husbands relatives are from brookline! isn’t that right by you?
i loved this post! it was so fun to read!
    xoxo

I loved Patrick Dempsey. I soooo have to do this Childhood Crush Confessional.

  17. MomisodesNo Gravatar

David Miller–YES! I loved “All for Love!” I totally forgot about that one. That was a much more suitable song for radio.. :)

Dave- There’s no doubt I would have been one of the brace-faced girls trying to break through a barricade for a glimpse of a New Kid!

Jameil- I’m 5′7″…but I was already that height by the time I was in 6th grade…..that was very unfortunate for my social life. Every boy was about a foot shorter than me :(

Kelly- thanks for the tall girl empathy…. it’s rare to find anyone who can relate…

Manda-..I wanted to run my fingers through his luscious, thick brown hair….but my mom didn’t like it when I touched the TV screen :( You should totally do this!!….I can’t wait to see who you swooned ;)

  18. KendraNo Gravatar

Jordan Knight was my fav New Kid on the Block too! funny post! thx for sharing!

  19. storytellerNo Gravatar

Sigh … I was TEACHING kids who grew up in the 80’s … but your list DID explain some things I may have missed back then. No wonder I feel like a dinosaur at times. Loved the pix and the walk down mem’ry lane :)
    Hugs and blessings,

I was parenting a teenager during the 80’s. I know all the things you speak of second-hand. I HATED Ferris Beuler! Of course, my daughter watched it over and over and over. One thing we agreed on is Patrick Swayze and Dirty Dancing. I think we shared a crush there. I’ll have to get my daughter to come down and read this post – she’ll go crazy!

  21. dreamyjNo Gravatar

TOO FUNNY! you are so cute. i also was really tall for a long time. they all caught up in 7th and 8th grade. love the heart throbs and the list of “you know you grew up in the 80s if…”

  22. karen megNo Gravatar

That was a great post! I was just thinking about what a geek Patrick Dempsey was back then and what a hottie he is now! I loved Ferris too, who would have thought he’d grow up and marry SJP! Remember her from Square Pegs? So you didn’t do too badly if hubby looks like him – he’s quite cute!
Oh, now you’ve got me started! I used to like Andrew McCarthy – yeah, who?? From St. Elmo’s Fire, Pretty in Pink… I know he had a weak chin and all but there was something about him. And then he went and did Weekend at Bernie’s…
My guy looked a little like him back then too, so maybe that’s why I married my man as well LOL

  23. Babyamore (Trish)No Gravatar

this is super ! I sort of remember Mc Dreamy now and heaps of these things growing up in the 80’s *sigh* where did the time go. We didn’t all those shows in OZ but I have heard of them.
