Dreams of Her Father

Since the birth of my daughter, I have developed a newfound respect for parents dealing with frequent flying, out-of-town situations. Whether for business or military leave, the missed milestones and sad, forlorn faces are never easy to bear.

Now that Dadisodes is trying to get his new company off its feet, he’s spending this week three time zones away in hopes of finding a contract.

Sadly, the goodbyes at the airport only get tougher as Babisodes grows older.  She has become more aware of the huge aircrafts along the runway, and their purpose: to take her father away to faraway places.

This time she was tough and brave during her long farewell. However, once the rear window rolled up, I could hear her stifled whimpers from the backseat.  And I wanted to cry for her.

So tonight, while Dadisodes hunkers over his laptop at 35,000 feet, Babisodes will be taking his place beside me in bed.

Dreaming of her daddy’s return.

Plus, remember what happened last time?  There is NO WAY I’m sleeping in that room alone, even if we have a new hi-tech alarm system.  Thankyouverymuch.

Yes. I remember last time. And the attic door. Of course, since your house IS haunted, it was probably just the resident ghost and nothing to worry about at all.

Nothing to worry about. At all.

Besides, worse come to worse, you can always call me.

Awww, that got the water welled. Sometimes I get little things from my babies when I go to work or I have something that evening and I will not be home until late or possibly after they are in bed. It’s heart-wrenching for Dadisodes too. I went to Vegas on a business trip last year and had a mostly awful time. There is no place more lonely than in a hotel room many miles away from your own room and only 10 channels on a crappy TV. I hope the trip is worth it though and the contract is landed.

That is so sad, Mia always gets sad when Damian is on call overnight, but like you I found the perfect distraction both girls sleep in my bed. (Although its mostly because I am a chicken and I dont want to sleep alone)

It get’s easier as they get older. My 5 year old really didn’t like me leaving for Toronto two weeks ago. In fact, she woke me up every night before I left to make sure it wasn’t the day I left.

One thing I’ve done, I actually got the idea from a commercial, is to bring something with and email pictures of the thing for the girls to see. Kinda helps them know how much I’m thinking about them while I’m gone.

As a dad, there’s nothing sweeter then the strangle hug each girl gives me when I get home. It sometimes hard to know who misses who more.

I know this situation well. My husband travels a lot also. Just wait until she’s old enough to bombard him with questions like my daughter does. “where are you going? How many days? How far is that? When are you coming back? Will you be gone while I am sleeping? Will you be here to take me to school?” And that is before he leaves and every day while he’s gone!

Awww. My husband started traveling a lot when the kids were little (still does). It was tough on them (and dad) for a while but it got better in time. Also, special presents from where he went helped some. I always let them sleep with me too.

That’s hard. I remember when my daughter was your daughters age. My hubby went on a 4 day golf trip…she told her pre-school teacher that her dad ‘left home’ and ‘didn’t know if he was coming back’. Ahhh, the mistaken look of sympathy upon pickup that day. lol

  43. PatsyNo Gravatar

My girls and I were very lucky in that Daddy didn’t have a job that caused him to travel but once in a great while. We actually grew to love those nights when Dad wasn’t going to be home. It was like a big slumber party — we ate only what we liked, watched what we wanted — that sort of thing. I did however make them all sleep in their own beds. Just never was one to snuggle with the kids in bed. Just me. But then I didn’t have things that went bump in the night hanging around. :)
