Fly away home

Back in March I posted about Dadisodes going away on a business trip.  As usual, he came home bearing an incredibly bizarre gift for our daughter.

Remember Ladybug Land?

Perhaps this photo will jog your memory.

Yes, despite my explicit directions for him not to buy our daughter a stuffed animal while away on business, he decided that live ones were okay.

Live animals that would arrive on our doorstep in the form of maggots.

Yum!

Despite my concerted efforts to hide the mailing form, Dadisodes was on top of it and sent away for the critters immediately.

The time sensitive package arrived while we were away in Florida. *Grin*

Dadisodes called from Key Largo to arrange for an emergency ladybug sitter to pick them up at our house. *Frown*

Who the heck did I marry?!

Anyhow, we missed the maggot phase while we were away on vacation and I prayed long and hard that none of the little buggers would make it.  However, most of them have now transformed.

We are now proud owners of eight little ladybugs.  And they are actually kind of cute, as far as bugs go.

That is until I fall asleep and dream about them escaping from their little habitat. Just so they can crawl into my ears.  And then scrape at my eardrum with their tiny, black legs.  While I contemplate violently ramming a chopstick in my ear to crush them.  But I won’t, because the last thing I need is bug guts slathered along my ear canal.

As for the remaining larvae? Well, they are still pupas.

Supa-dupa.

I hope those buggers never hatch.

Did I say that out loud?

Well, it beats Sea Monkeys. At least lady bugs are kind of pretty, Sea Monkeys (brine shrimp) just look like back wash.

Lady bugs were meant to live in nature. Maybe you can convince Babisoides that they would be happier outside in the wild.

Ladybug Ladybug fly away home. Your house is on fire and your children are alone. Ummm…maybe you could tweak that old nursery rhyme to be not so traumatic and more positive?

Maybe you could make an outdoor ladybug home? If they leave just tell her that they found a better place, you know, one with a swimming pool.

As you can tell, there was no way Ladybugs were going to move into my house! They tried! They tried many times.

LOL-ing forever, especially at your postscript. And you knew there was no way you were getting out of those maggots; Dadisodes strikes me as quite conscientious.

At least they’re supposed to be good luck if they land on you, right? Ah, sweet superstition.

After all, the man IS a geek. Well, maybe not a total geek, but he has strong geek tendencies. I mean, he can’t be TOO bad, can he? He was smart enough to marry YOU, after all, so he couldn’t be TOTALLY geeked out.

I know … give him a list of acceptable toys/gifts, etc. Like …

  33. LisaNo Gravatar

Ok, that’s just hilarious! Interestingly, my husband recently dared me to Google how many spiders a human consumes over the course of a year…while sleeping. Gag. Seriously. He said we all accidentally eat like seven spiders a year. The great thing is it turned out to be an urban legend, so I’m thinking the ladybug would have like zero interest in crawling in to your ear at night. But, you never know. Could you tape the container shut so they never, ever, ever, ever escape???

    Back to hilarious! Totally hilarious!

My sister, with whom we are in a noisy/annoying toy war, one year sent an amphibian farm. Seriously. You sent away for tadpoles, and watched them turn into frogs.

    Except…Ours never did.

I have not ever managed to figure out how we could have arrested those poor tadpoles in their prepubescent state. But we did.

I finally threw them in the nearest pond. It was a mercy killing. Proud supporter of pet euthanasia.

  37. Run DMTNo Gravatar

I think the ladybugs are really cool! I’ve been wanting to do this with my girls, too. You may remember we hatched butterflies around Easter. See, now that kind of skeeved me, truth be told. The cocoons were gross looking and no one told me that meconium would be squirted all over the butterfly home. It’s been left in hanging in the tree because i don’t want to clean that yucky stuff. I’ll wipe a baby’s bottom and scrub toilets, but don’t make me clean up butterfly sh*t. :-P

  38. Joyce-AnneNo Gravatar

Ladybugs are cool but larvae are NOT. Also, all insects belong outside. I hope you can convince Babisodes to let them free. Maybe you can tell her they need to live in Ladybug Land and be free. Good luck!

Two summers my girls got the exact same thing! Yeah the lil’ maggots arriving were damn freaky – you are so glad you missed that part.

Ladybugs in your eardrum huh? You crack me up. I never went that far with my escaping from their habitat worry. I was more concerned we would forget to give them that drop of water and they would shrivel up and die.

I actually loved it when we set them free in our backyard….I may have even shed a tear.

katelyn and jacob LOVE ladybugs. Lucky (or unlucky?) for me, my MIL’s garden are always full of them! So every time I pick them up, they have a couple of new ladybugs in a little styrofoam cup to bring home. And, yes, they’ve been released accidentally and never to be seen again inside the house. I think you are luckier to actually have a “house” for them…
