Fruit: The other red meat
Seven years ago, we adopted our dog Pete. During a raging fire in southern California, a San Diego animal shelter found him lost and malnourished alongside charred farmland in the mountains.
Throughout the years, we have noticed that he will pretty much eat anything. Especially vegetables. I attribute this behavior to surviving those fires.
If given the choice between kibble and carrots? He would choose carrots.
Every night while prepping and chopping vegetables for dinner, he begs. Whimpers even.
It’s pathetic.
And if one tiny morsel of produce accidentally falls off the counter, he pounces. As if broccoli could run away.
He barely even chews.
And apparently, he has has an affinity for fruit, too.

Surprisingly enough, he gently nibbled this strawberry off in the backyard in silence.
Probably hoping I would blame it on a squirrel.

that is hilarious – our dog won’t eat veggie s- anything else – not veggie s- and the fruit – how do you keep the rabbits from eating them all up?

It amazes me how much animals will adapt. That’s so delicate in terms of his approach with the strawberry. My cat’s favorite food was peas. He’d take one pea in his teeth, drop it from the bowl, bat it all over the house with his paws, and finally “capture” it and eat it. Then he’d repeat with every pea in the bowl. There was no finer treat to give him.

That dog sounds hilarious!
Our dacshund will eat about everything (except fruit) but the shih-tzu will leave peas on her plate if she gets a treat of chicken pot pie or stew. And then guards them as long as she can to keep her buddy away from them but the dacshund invarably gets in there eventually and snaps them up.

I used to have a dog that was big on table scraps – as most dogs are. But she was, essentially, a meat eater. EXCEPT. You never, EVER, wanted to have a bowl of grapes in your lap if Lady was around. She would conquer ANY obstacle to get grapes. And if you happened to be the obstacle, well …

While I have yet to learn how to control my sons’ diets, my dog is allergic to food coloring. So no kibble for her.
She eats an entirely natural diet of–wait for it–frozen chicken wings and canned tuna.
YEP.
And whatever veggies are left over from trimmings and dinner. Carrots get wolfed down whole. Broccoli and green beans, ditto. Tomatoes are a fave, and apple cores.
And strawberry tops. The part you cut off before you eat it.
So, in short, I’m not surprised.

My 7 year old replied, “yeah, she’ll even eat the newspaper, but she won’t touch the comics.” Surprised by his response I said, “Why’s that?” He said, “She thinks they taste funny.”

That’s very cute! I’m glad you rescued a dog. Actually, dogs are omnivorous, not just meat eaters, and most commercial dog food has vegetables in it. Some dog experts consider a really healthy, organic meal of meat, vegetables and carbs to be the healthiest thing for a dog.
My dogs loved cantelope and watermelon, as well as broccoli and cabbage (because they’re stinky?), carrots and raw string beans. So I gave them some in a little bowl when I was making the same food for myself. They also loved rotten fish and Chinese food, which I’m guessing are not as healthy (too much sodium in the Chinese food).

That is too funny! Maybe I need to take a lesson or two from your dog about eating healthy. But he seems to like the same things I like broccoli, strawberries. I’m wondering if I should start growing some fruits in our yard. That would be so much cheaper.
