Holey cow

acblooddrawWell, it was nice while it lasted.

For those who follow here, you may have noticed my recent obsession with food. And although I have posted about some not-so-healthy fare, behind the scenes, I truly do my best to eat well, especially throughout this pregnancy.

People often ask me why I do not just eat what I want while pregnant.  I am told to not worry so much about the weight. That it will all come off after the baby.

Unfortunately, those people are not my doctor.

I wish I were one of those pregnant women who could just ‘be pregnant.’

The ones who can eat Ding Dongs and Ho-Ho’s for nine months and still able to keep their weight within healthy limits.

As a non-pregnant woman, I can usually pull that off. However, while pregnant, my body does not comply.

During my last pregnancy, I tried to just enjoy myself and ate as I normally would, plus or minus a few binges when cravings set in.

Unfortunately, by my third trimester, I was a borderline gestational diabetic.

I swear I was not able to eat anything but chicken salad for months.

Not to mention, I still gained well over 40 pounds during that pregnancy.   I was on bed-rest for nearly 4-months, and never wanted to know what my final weight was.

So this time around, I really wanted to eat healthy and maintain reasonable weight gain (especially in case I required bed rest again).  All in hopes of avoiding blood sugar issues again.

So far in this pregnancy (at 30 weeks), I have gained a total of 16 pounds.  If I gain 1-pound per week until the very end, I will fall right into the recommended weight gain range, with ample wiggle room since my BMI was on the lower end pre-pregnancy.

However, all of my efforts may have been in vain.

I failed my glucose screening test last week. Just like I did with Babisodes.

So this past weekend, I returned to the hospital and took a more in-depth glucose test.  I did not have any food or water for 14 hours, and sat in the hospital for four of them, requiring a blood draw every hour.  Did I mention I’m preggers?

Now I look smokin’ hot with these track marks on my arms.  All I need is a brown bag and a 40 oz fin one hand, and a Virgina Slim in the other to complete the picture.

I don’t care. I’ll endure the test again as long as I do not have to go on a strict diabetic diet (usually low-carb).

I could MAYBE handle not eating bread or pasta.

But no rice?

It’s like asking a cow not to graze.

I seriously think I saw a california roll shaped cloud in the sky today…

Oh bummer!! I’m so sorry. When do you find out your results? I was always sooo paranoid that I was going to have to do the long, torturous version of that test. You deserve a whole box of Lucky Charms for that!

I remember being soooooo nervous about the glucose tolerance test just because I knew how difficult it would be to give up so many of my favorite foods. Good luck with YOUR test results! Fingers crossed for you!

GD usually results in LARGE babies, but the effects on Mommy are temporary. Usually. GD can indicate a tendency to diabetes in later life, but it doesn’t have to. And of course, being diagnosed as GD means you’ll watch your diet and minimize any effect on the lovely you. Just take care of you – one day at a time.

Sorry to hear you ended up with gestational diabetes again. Hopefully you won’t have to be on bed rest! My best friend had that with both her pregnancies and for the second one she had a “baby nurse” go to her home daily to check her blood sugar. That bruise you got looks pretty nasty.

Awww, sorry to hear you had the long test. That sucks. My wife did it twice. At least you got to sit in a hospital, she had to sit in one of those lab places where most people are there to do drug tests. Ew.

My mother-in-law told me that when she was pregnant with her first kid (my husband), she ate like a pregnant lady — whatever the heck she wanted — and gained 42 pounds. Her doctor scolded her and warned that the next time she got pregnant, 42 pounds would be unacceptable. So during her second pregnancy, she was on a very strict diet to ENSURE that she wouldn’t gain as much weight as she had the first time…

But she gained EXACTLY 42 pounds that time, too. So, if she were to read this post of yours, she’d probably say, “Eff it. Eat what you want.”

    :)

Ugh! That’s no fun at all! I hope the testing shows you are going to get through it all without giving up rice. I can’t believe they did that to a pregnant woman though.

I had GD with my daughter. Not with my first son. With my 2nd son, I failed the 1-hour and passed the 3-hour. Those tests are so not fun.

I know how much it stressed me out to have GD, so I really, really hope you don’t have it. I blame being built like a boy (no hips, small tits).

Sounds like it’s something that just happens to you, no matter how you eat. However, imiagine being on that strict diabetic diet for life. I’m limited to 25 g. of carbs per meal — approximately 1/2 c. of cooked rice, assuming I eat no other carbs (no peas, corn, beans or carrots) and no dessert. It won’t be much longer for you, and then you can eat what you want! Hang n there.

I did get gestational diabetes with my Little One … it was a bit of a pain in the butt. And I had to do blood testing all the time and fax in the results each week. And follow a strict diet. It is annoying but bearable in the end. Plus I got to have lots of extra ultrasounds so that was a big plus. Hope you get a pass though as it wasn’t a good time.

  42. skiploveyNo Gravatar

Oh man that’s blows. That test had me so scared it seriously inhibited my holiday chocolate binging. But I’m actually kinda glad I had it looming over me, stopping me from packing on a bunch of unnecessary pounds. Thankfully I passed the test and my weight is on track. You’ve only gained 16 lbs? Wow. I’m up to 20 so I’ve got to keep it down to 10 these final 9 weeks. which is about what I did with Nate, now that the belly is so large, there’s not much room or appetite lately. Sadly.

Really hoping you pass the next test. A friend of mine had to do the longer test and she passed. I failed the anemia test though. Yummy iron pills for me!
    Best of luck!

I have a friend going through the same thing. Not fun. Hopefully with some small diet changes she (and you) can continue to have healthy pregnancies.
