House Of Possible Horrors

Have I ever told you I’m a wuss? A big fat scaredy cat afraid of her own shadow? Well I am. I’ve slept with a nightlight since I was a three. I’m afraid of the dark, heights, spiders, frogs, snakes, worms, insects, rodents, drawn curtains at night, horror movies, lightening, and watching America’s Most Wanted (John Walsh’s voice alone freaks me out).

I alluded to some creepy activity in our house a few days back, and mentioned my daughter keeps saying she sees “ghostses.” And many of you have gathered around the campfire to share your ghostly stories and ghost busting tips. Although I’d like to say I’m sitting back cozy with a few toasted marshmallows, I’m really typing up this entry from beneath my covers with all the lights on in the room.

Needless to say that when I read Sarah’s entry about her own paranormal encounter,… I had to change. my. pants. Go read it, but seriously, bring an extra pair of pants with you.

Anyhow, here’s the low down on our house of possible horrors we’ve now lived in for ohhh…7 days.

It was after 10pm on Monday. We just finished unpacking as many boxes possible for the evening and were ready to call it a day. Hubby and I spent most of the day taking turns unpacking and wrangling the toddler throughout the house. Everywhere except for one room- the dining room. We don’t have a dining table or furniture for that room yet, so we left it alone. The rest of the rooms kept us plenty busy, so we were exhausted and headed upstairs for the night. As hubby brushed his teeth, I turned on our tiny 12” TV in our bedroom with the sound nearly off (I like to read Closed Captioning on the Weather Channel). As I waited for the local weather update, I walked out of our bedroom to join hubby to brush my teeth.

*CRASH!!!!*

Hubby and I both heard the loud noise downstairs and stood a bit frozen for a minute waiting to hear more to follow. It was silent.

We gingerly tip-toed downstairs to assess the areas. Living room, nothing. Kitchen, nothing, Dining room…um, who opened the window?!?!

As I mentioned before, none of us ever went into this room or touched anything in it.

Hold onto your pants as I give you the lamest re-enactment, ever. What? I’m afraid of the dark remember?

Here is what the window shade looked like all day.

ShadeDown

Here is what we saw when we came downstairs after the loud crash (except it was pitch black outside the window).

ShadeUp

So here’s the clincher, the shade was rolled up so tightly, I cannot even recreate what it actually looked like with my bare hands. This photo of the shade is as rolled up as I can physically get it to be.

Moments after we came downstairs to see the window shade open, the nearly muted TV upstairs in our bedroom began blasting audio! For about 8-10 seconds the TV volume went to full blast, then back to being nearly muted. The remote control was sitting right beside the TV, nowhere near anyone.

The next night, the other window shade in our dining room DID THE SAME THING! Did I mention that we have these same roll up shades in EVERY single room in this house, but this only happens in the dining room? Also, every time I walk through this room, I feel a breeze of cold air. Go ahead. It’s okay. Call me crazy.

Aside from these incidents, we also play this scenario every night in our bedroom:

Me: Did you hear that?

Hubby: *Snoooore…Snort!*….Huh? What? What happened?

Me: Wake up! Did. you .hear. that?

*sits silently as the sound of muffled footsteps in our attic appears*

Hubby: I’m going to check on it.

Me: NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! DON’T LEAVE ME!!! You. Can’t. Leave. Me….. *sobbing*

Hubby goes to stand half in our bedroom doorway and half in the hallway to listen.

*Footsteps faint and intermittent, but definitely still there*

Me: Get back over here and sit next to me! *sinking down under covers*

Hubby: *eye roll*

There you have it, our first week in our old, creepy house. Did I mention our town is over 350 years old? And Minutemen during the American Revolution died right around here? I just hope that this goes away. If it doesn’t, I may need to start wearing Depends. And if it gets worse, I’m heading for the hills! Or a Holiday Inn….

Oh Sandy! That is just freaky! You know what I hate? Is when I hear noises when my husband is travelling! I have a very active imagination, not good, really not good.

    OMG that’s really creepy.

I was actually in a similar incident when I was around 12 years old. My parents and I moved to a new apartment in L.A. It was our first night there, and I slept all alone in my bedroom. I must have started to dream after I fell asleep. In my dream, I saw a shadow of a man in a cape and hat, but I can see nothing more (not his face or how tall he is). For some reason, my hands were stretched out and I was trying to touch him. I wasn’t even sure why.

In my dream, I was crying. And suddenly, I woke up and I realized that I was really crying because I felt tears streaming down my face. AND…I looked to the right and found my arm actually stretched out towards a shadow of the same man in my dream! I think my heart must have been pounding so hard I didn’t even hear my mom come in. She must have heard me crying and came to check on me. Once the light was on, the shadow disappeared. It took me a long time to fall asleep again that night.

I don’t remember if anything else happened after that, but that was my first creepy night at our new apartment back when I was younger. Your story reminded me of that incident, and it scares me every time I remember it. However, I don’t think anything else like that occurred after that first night, so I really hope whatever it is that’s happening to your house will go away!

Get someone in to do a space clearing. Or you could do it yourself. It’s mainly some chanting about asking the spirits to leave, waving smudge sticks about, hit a Tibetan singing bowl a few times, and Bob’s your uncle.

Or, you could have a housewarming party with lots of lights and music and laughter. That’ll help shift the energy too. :)

Okay. That is a bit creepy. I locked the bedroom everytime I go to bed in my husband’s rented house here. At home, I am not that scared because we have been living there for so long.

So, I hope everythings alright there and it was just a false alarm. Do you want me to send our family’s witch doctor? We are that kind of old-fashion-superstitious asian family …

Those roller blinds are the bane of my existence. I won’t have anything to do with them. Period. They frequently snap closed like that, at the most inopportune moment. And just try getting them to open or close when you want them to.

As for the footsteps and TV volume, you’re on your own. I also don’t think it would be inappropriate to call the previous owners and ask if they’ve ever noticed anything. Unless you’d rather not.

Given time you will get used to the noises your new ‘old’ house is making.
Old houses creak, groan, rattle and roll. They make noises. They MOVE. If the roll up shades are doing that, then take them down and replace them with thin venetian blinds. But don’t let the stuff that your old house is doing wig you out. Talk to your neighbors. You’ll find that they’ll tell you what your house is doing is what their houses are doing. They hear noises, although if they’ve been in their homes any length of time they probably don’t really notice the noises very much.

I know it’s scary. But I promise you, there is nothing to be afraid of. Nothing but an old house getting older – and noisier.

Hmmm … methinks I might be freaked out at such things happening in my house, especially if it was 350+ years old and I’d just moved in (after signing the next 30 years away on a mortgage), but I suspect Lou is correct and you’ll get used to the noises eventually. That said … the idea of a “psychic cleanse” can’t hurt and might just help. I had a woman do something similar in my home a few years after Lynne & the girls moved out when I experienced some “oddities” … and immediately following her visit the strangeness disappeared.

Creepy! And even more creepy that link you left!!! I hope you don’t start having experiences like Sarah’s!!

I have a total paranoia about living in an old home. We are the original owners of both our current house and the one we’re moving into in April. I like living in something new. (However, I’m so paranoid that sometimes I fret over what might have occurred on the land before we built on it… sad, huh?)

Good luck with the new house! Hope you don’t have any more ghostes!

Hey…okay…definitely not bad electricity wiring doing that. Email me where you live…and your address. (If you want). I’ll do some research for you.

And, I agree about the house cleansing.

And, about switching out the blinds. You could also just hang some thick curtains or a bedsheet for now (if you want to wait on spending the money) to just see if something odd happens with that? – like an experiment?

And, I guess it’s true about old houses making weird noises. And, they do. Like creaks and that sort of thing. But, not so much footsteps. Or making your tv blare (unless it’s electrical too).

Maybe you should get your hubby to watch Ghost Hunters on TV. He can learn some ways to detect whether it’s a ghost or if your house is just old and what not. I’d say you should watch it, but I really think it’d freak you out. On the other hand, you could see them debunk some supposed haunted places and how they do it…and give you some ideas on what to try to solve your own little mystery?

Oh…and I agree…call the neighbors and ask about their homes of if they know anything about yours. And, call the previous owners.

I never believed in ghosts or haunts until I lived in an upstairs apartment above what used to be an old nightclub.

Similar experiences to what your writing about here. I’d be in in the kitchen HOME ALONE and the tv in the living room would come on and change channels in the living room. Which I could see from the kitchen. Open floor plan and all of that.

I sometimes hear “footsteps” upstairs when I’m the only one home. It’s the house doing its thing – settling, creaking, getting really cold this winter. And roller blinds, especially old ones, do that snap thing all the time. I think it has something to do with the springs getting tired. If it makes you feel better, do have someone ‘bless’ your house. I think any home we move into should be prayed over and blessed by the family as a good, happy place to live – a kind of dedication.

I echo those saying to check the history of the house. And it also could be things settling in. If the window frames get colder and expand at night, that could be doing the blinds thing. Not sure about the TV, though.

In a case like this you are both your best assessor and your worst frightener. Make sense? You will generally be able to “feel” if the presence is dangerous. If you don’t get a feeling of “malice” you will probably just eventually get used to these things. Unfortunately (if you’re anything like me) you might also be the number one person who will scare yourself more than the situation calls for with your active imagination.

Speaking positively out loud has helped us in the past, and John and I also tend to mention the name of the Lord if we feel ill presence, but, of course, that’s related to our beliefs. Of course, I wouldn’t mention it if it hadn’t helped, either.

    Hang in there, babe!

  43. ChristineNo Gravatar

The chill may be caused by a draft in the dining room which could also contribute to the blinds snapping. My roller blinds do this on occasion. Startles me every time. I have had my TV volume go funny and it may be the TV stations fault. My house is not real old and it can make noises in the heating ducts and walls especially in the cold weather. Do you have any large birds in your area? I once had ravens walking on the roof of a house we had just moved into. That freaked me out until I figured out the source of the sound of footsteps that seemed to come from my attic. This may just be a series of coincidences that seem frightening in new surroundings. On the funny side: My toilet sounds like it is possessed at times. Maybe I have a toilet ghost. Probably got in through the sewer. Try putting up the blinds at night and if they are down in the morning…then you do have a problem! I just wrote that to make you smile. Maybe don’t do that cause if they are down in the morning EEEEEEEK!

Oh wow . . . scary. I am getting chills sitting here typing this. I’m freaking myself out and it didn’t even happen to me!

Maybe you can just have a priest or paster come over and bless the house . . . you know, just in case . . . or just for your piece of mind. If at anytime the priest/pastor sees a ton of flies, tar seeping from the walls, or a voice that says, “Get Out,” then you might consider taking an extended vacation . . .

OMG . . . did I freak you out? Just delete this comment . .

OR, remember the POWER of suggestion. One creepy thought can turn into a fungus . . .

Another idea is to keep comedy films playing all the time. If that doesn’t lighten the mood then Will Ferrell jumping around in his skivvies just might scare the spirits away.

Wow. I do not think you are crazy at all. I have had quite a few “ghostes” experiences myself, so I am a believer.
My hubby and I are pretty interested in this stuff since nothing like this has ever happened to him but a bunch has happened to me. He does believe in it though.
ANYWAY, we always watch Ghost Hunters about a team of investigators that go around to “haunted” sites and use actual scientific instruments to find out if a place is haunted or not.
We also watch Paranormal State (http://www.aetv.com/paranormal-state/) which does the same thing but with a more religious background in it. They actually help people get rid of ghosts if there are any actually there. Go to their website if ya want. You could even get them to go to your house! :)

Put the sign of the cross, with holy water, on all windows, doors and doorways. You can say out loud, “The power of God protects me”. Tell the ghosts that this is your house now and they need to move on. You control your house. Pray for the ghosts too. It really helps.

Still don’t believe in ghosts, even after this post. The shades in the dining room are obviously broken, the electrical wiring is old right? hence the tv volume fluctuation. The footsteps are a tree branch hitting the roof or wood settling. I would camp out in the attic for a night to see what the sound was (with my husband of course), have the electrical wiring in the bedroom checked and switch out the blinds in the dining room.

Then, if anything else freaky happens, maybe, just maybe you can make a believer out of me :)

p.s. I am sorry you are freaking out over all of this and hope you know I totally feel for your situation and am trying to make you feel better :) If I lived near you, I would camp out in your attic for you because that is just the kind of friend I am :)

Hokay. Seriously not something I should be reading about. Like I passed on washing feeding bottles the other night just because I was going to be left alone in the kitchen while the hubby prepares the kids for bedtime.

My great-aunt who lives with my parents in the house across the yard sees people (ghosts) outside the house peeking in. My sister’s gay friend saw a “white” lady in the second floor through the french windows one night. TV gets turned off suddenly while we are all watching and the remote is far away on top of the bed. The volume thingie happened to me and the hubby while we were taking a nap and the radio was on very low volume. The kids also used to see “red” eyes when they were very little every time we would take an afternoon nap.

It can be really scary but I’ve gotten used to it. also, our house has been blessed and we know the people who used to live there. I would have to agree that as long as you don’t feel anything malevolent, then it’s probably ok. and as long as it’s not a threat to your daughter.

Have you tried sticking a football helmet on the baby and pushing her across the floor?

(Hang in there, honey. Once it realizes that you’re the coolest owner it has ever had, it’ll probably start doing housework. :)

OMG. Freaky! We had something like this in several houses we’ve lived and eventually we had to live because people in the house are getting sick…you’re familiar with some Asian traditions right? If there’s just too much bad energy, it will drain the people inside the house.

On the other side, just a precautionary measure…yes do check the wirings. ;)

Sorry for the delayed comment…I had been running around but glad to be back here!

omg! omg! that is freaky. Maybe you need to burn some sage and say a little latin like they do in the movies.

Just found you on a link from someone else’s blog. That’s SPOOKY. That sort of thing creeps me out. And the footsteps?!?! I’ve got chills. And Sarah’s story!? Oh. My. God. I believe in ghosts and am easily scared. I saw one in my Grandma’s house on the second story when I was 8. I haven’t been upstairs since then (that’s been 20 years!). My daughter will go up there when we are over and I’ll hear her talking and laughing. When I yell up there and ask her what she’s doing the response is always “Oh, just playing with my friends!”

    AHHHHH!

I always wondered why the people in Amityville Horror never moved when there house told them to “GET OUT.” I think you’re fine in your house, until the ghosts start telling you to leave.

Right before my Father in Law’s wake, my youngest woke up suddenly from her nap in the hotel, got up, pointed to the night stand and kept pointing at something as she “followed it” to the door. I asked her what was she was doing, she said, nothing Mama, I see an angel, did you see it?
I was FLIPPING out. I was there alone with her because we both had the flu. Now, I wonder if her grandpa came to blow her a kiss goodbye….
Some people are tuned into that sort of thing. I am tuned into my baseball bat under my bed, and my bad to the bone security system, that is what I am in tune with LOL.

That shade is old, get shutters. Change your batteries in your remote and if anything else happens, come on over, we live in the hills of Texas!

I am not going to read the comments. Cause I am a big scaredy cat too. But I will give you a little bit of advice. During the day talk to the house, tell it it is freaking you the freak out. See if it makes a difference. It did with me.

The house I lived in that was like that is now on the market, again. The occupant has lost their job and has severe clinical depression, again. The house should be bulldozed.

  80. JoeNo Gravatar

Yep, haunted. Can’t tell if you are haunted by defective curtains or the real thing. I am a skeptic, but I hope it doesn’t scare you to know that I believe in ghosts. I have had one very severe experience myself, and my parents have one of the most incredible stories of paranormal activity. They bought a house where a cop died (they had no idea) and crazy stuff happened to them on many occasions there (before my time). Anyways, would love to read updates, but make sure you don’t feed fear, dangerous thing to do. Its your house even its haunted.
