Letting it fall

Every year around this time a feeling begins to stir. A tiny part of me deep inside begins to panic.  It has been this way ever since we moved to New England.

Around my birthday, the world around us grows cold, and the days become shorter.  This never happened in Florida or California.

Here in Massachusetts, it does.

From the moment I wake, it is a race against time, a race for light.  Both of which appear to be slipping away.

I know it is just part of the transition from autumn to winter.  But as the sun tucks away sooner, and as the few remaining leaves dangle above, part of me wants to hold on.  Latch onto the thin shirts hanging in my closet.  Step out of the shade and chase the flecks of sunlight along sidewalks.

Before the season completely overturns, I always feel inclined to soak in as much of the brisk air as possible. Embrace the world around me with the flesh of my bare hands. So I can remember.

Before the cold arrives and blankets it in snow.

That is a wonderful pile of leaves! How long did it take to rake them all up and how quickly did Babisodes destory that work? I’m glad you were able to soak up a few rays of sunshine.

    Me too!
You know I was just thinking that even though October was cold and rainy, I’m kind of glad that it seems Oct and Nov have switched and we are getting the nice fall now. Maybe then winter won’t seem so looooooonnnnngggg. ;)

It looks like you’re doing a good job of capturing it during that transition. And that is one MONSTROUS pile of leaves. No wonder she has such a gigantic smile!

  10. MomisodesNo Gravatar

Jameil- It must be a childhood instinct. My daughter just knew to leap right into the pile :)

Joyce-Anne- I’m right there with you.

Patsy- Thankfully, Dadisodes raked up the backyard over the weekend. Since most of the ground was dry, it didn’t take too long. It’s the bagging that takes forever!

Tracy- Fall does have some beautiful aspects.

ceemee- I think she had a ball :) I didn’t have Fall growing up either.

Kat- It is so true. October was really bizarre this year. In the past 2 months, I think we’ve had ONE weekend where it didn’t rain. However, I’ll take it. Like you said, as long as it makes winter seem shorter :)

blueviolet- Thank you. It was a pretty monsterous pile!

  11. Cecily RNo Gravatar

Ohhh, she is SO SO cute!! Those shots make me ALMOST feel excited about the massive amounts of raking we need to do this weekend. Almost. Sigh. :)

I’m the same way. I don’t want the days to get shorter. I’m already in the mood for spring.

What a great leaf pile. My kids would love to “unpile” it for you!

I’m a New England girl through and through, so the change of the seasons feels as natural as breathing. But, I do cherish those beautiful fall days, or that rare Christmas when everyone can run around outside without coats.

Although I cannot wait to wake up to see the world blanketed in white. That, to me, still feels like magic.

Love those photos; your daughter is adorable.

Would it be ok if I send my girls to your house to take a face in the leaves picture? Sadly, they will never get to have one in their youth unless I do. Some things about Florida suck, we miss out on this season’s wonderful colors, but we’ll be quite appreciative in a couple months I’m sure.

this is the first time i’ve come across your blog and i have to say it’s fast becoming one of my favourite reads!!!!

and wow — that is an impressive pile of leaves.

it looks like you’re not much into fall but i, for one, am in-love with fall — and the rain — and the snow. i feel exactly as you do now when the summer starts. i tend to hide in my place because i hate the heat and just want to be indoors where there is some nice air conditioning keeping me cool.
