Pinching inches…and pennies

The last time I was pregnant, I was living in Southern California.

In hopes of one day getting getting pregnant again, I kept all of my maternity clothes. But as you can imagine, the selection consists of tank tops and more tank tops.

Now after calculating my due date, I’ve come to realize that I will most likely reach epic whale-ish proportions in the dead of winter next year (February 2010).

Tank tops are not going to cut it here in Boston.

And did I mention that at less than 3 months pregnant I am already larger than I was during my 4th month of pregnancy with my daughter?

I’m a little skerred.

Anyhow, since we’re doing our best to tighten our belts these days, and blowing $100 on a maternity winter coat is out of the question, I headed down to The Garment District in Boston in hopes of finding a deal on a large coat. The department store is a huge building filled with costumes, new and used clothes, as well as clothes by the pound.

Their clothing by the pound is a heaping pile of hundreds of pounds of used clothing that is changed out daily. It’s like digging for treasure in a sense. I was surprised to see so many brand name items from stores such as Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, and LL Bean.

I was especially excited to find this gem in the pile…

woolcoat-garmentdistrict

… a lovely wool coat from the GAP.

With a lovelier price tag of $4.00.

  3. Nancy@ifevolutionworks.comNo Gravatar

Now THAT is what I would call an amazing find!! It’s adorable!

  4. ceemeeNo Gravatar

That’s a really cute coat! And indeed a nice price that Dadisodes wouldn’t raise his brows at. :-)

  5. Cecily RNo Gravatar

Um…SCORE. That is fabulous!!! And the price makes it even more so!

  6. Michelle @ one crafty mamaNo Gravatar

Clothes by the pound? A coat for $4.00? Now that is my idea of a fun shopping spree. :)

  7. SharonNo Gravatar

Oh HECK YEAH!!! That’s my kind of shopping! Lucky girl!!!

  8. Maggie`s MindNo Gravatar

Very, very nice. Nothing like finding something expensive for something ridiculously cheap. Especially when it`s an item you need.

  9. Lisa @ Boondock RamblingsNo Gravatar

Can I give you a whoot-whoot! Or is it woot-woot? Well, either way this is some very exciting news and I am excited for you. Now, if only I could find something similar — not because I’m pregnant, but just because I need a
    “new” winter coat! :-)

  10. CookieNo Gravatar

I love a bargain! great find!
I made it through pregnancy in NYC without a winter maternity coat. You’re always hot when you’re pregnant anyway.

  11. bluevioletNo Gravatar

    Sweetness! You lucky dawg!

  12. SiobhanNo Gravatar

Great coat! Aaaaaaaaaaaand, it has been entirely too long since I have visited you apparently! Congrats my dear! SOOOO excited to read that news! Woohoo!

  13. dysfunctional momNo Gravatar

Bummer, I was all ready to suggest you move to a warmer climate. =)
    Awesome deal!

  14. AliciaNo Gravatar

Oh yah!! That is so worth the digging!

  15. BuckeroomamaNo Gravatar

A $4 winter coat?! Whoa. What a great deal. :)

  16. Run DMTNo Gravatar

FOUR DOLLARS! That is amazing!!! What a great coat! You should go back there and buy some items to sell on ebay. Us fools in Tampa, FL don’t know things like garment districts. We’ll pay $10 for such great finds on ebay.

  17. AJNo Gravatar

    Nice find!

Maternity clothes can be so expensive…can you trade favors with friends for any?

I’ve lived in Michigan for all three of my pregnancies, and luckily, I’ve been due in September for all three of them, so the clothes work out. But with the 1st, I needed maternity clothes starting at week 24. The second, starting at week 10. The third, before week 7. Uteruses apparently have impecable memories on how to expand!

  18. Tiff@ThreePeasNo Gravatar

WOW now that’s a deal! Love the coat. Wish we had something like that here!

  19. PunaNo Gravatar

Now that is a great find.

  20. Cascia @ Healthy MomsNo Gravatar

Now that is more like it. What a deal! I remember being pregnant in the winter time when I lived in Wisconsin. Winter maternity clothes are not as much fun as cute summer sun dresses and tank tops.

  21. CassieNo Gravatar

That is a pretty coat. I can’t believe you got it for 4 bucks. That is awesome!

  22. JenniferNo Gravatar

    Fabulous find and beautiful coat.

  23. Nancy from Fear and Parenting in Las VegasNo Gravatar

Great coat. I remember what a pain maternity clothes were. Have you tried consignment kids shops? Ours around here usually have some good maternity sections too.

  24. CaraNo Gravatar

Wow, I wish we had a Garment District in Baltimore! Great coat, at a great price! Well done.

  25. AmyNo Gravatar

That’s aweome! I got most of my maternity clothes from Target and Kohl’s.

  26. Alana @ The Good Girl Gone BlogNo Gravatar

I am EXTREMELY impressed. We need to go on a shopping date soon!

  27. MichelleNo Gravatar

That is a gorgeous coat! Great find. I am catching up with your posts and am so excited for you — congratulations on the pregnancy! I am back and will be reading and wishing you the best :-)

  28. Brutally HonestNo Gravatar

Swwweeettt! That’s an awesome deal! I had that problem…I was pregnant during three different seasons. Although, by my third pregnancy I was pretty much shunning all maternity wear and some how forced my ginormous booty and even bigger tummy into fat girl clothes!

  29. ElaineNo Gravatar

Wow, you found a great coat! That place sounds like it would be right up my alley!

  30. JacNo Gravatar

$4?! What a GREAT deal!! I bet that made your day :)

  31. TabithaNo Gravatar

Sweet!! That is awesome. I need to find some kind of deal like that, too…not because I’m pregnant, but because I lived in So Cal my whole life, too, and might be moving to the EAST COAST next year. So my wardrobe? Seriously lacking in wintery goodness. :)

  32. Lis @ A Trucker WifeNo Gravatar

What an awesome deal! I wonder if anywhere areoun me does clothes by the pound.

  33. sheilaNo Gravatar

HOLY COWWWWWWWWWWWWW! $4? Awesome! And cute to boot!

  34. MRs F with 4No Gravatar

Seeing as I’m DONE with pregnancy (MR F says that four is ENOUGH) – can I help? How tall are you? I have four bumps-worth of clothes – send me an email, perhaps I can help? (for even LESS than $4!)

  35. MissNo Gravatar

OMG I need to hustle out to Boston and do some shopping with you!

  36. The MotherNo Gravatar

Sweaters over tank tops. But I do get your dilemma.

    Nice find.

  37. Karen @ If I Could EscapeNo Gravatar

It’s gorgeous! And, just FOUR BUCKS?!! Happy WW!

  38. Jen of a2eatwriteNo Gravatar

It looks perfect! That should also do you. Despite being in Boston, being pregnant in the winter is like having a little furnace inside you. I think a fleece jacket was my main pregnancy accessory in Michigan (C was born in April).

  39. DotNo Gravatar

What a deal! I like to shop thrift stores. A friend got a beautiful yellow heavyweight silk blazer in new-like condition for $6! We found things with the tgs still on them, too. Aren’t there also maternity used clothing stores? Might as well take advantage of the savings.

  40. Rachel @ Grasping for Objectivity in my Subjective LifeNo Gravatar

GREAT find! Clothes always feel so much better when bought for a great bargain, don’t they?!?! I love that feeling!

  41. JeanetteNo Gravatar

    what a fantastic bargain!

  42. Mama in SuburbiaNo Gravatar

Wow, what a bargain!!! I need one of those stores in CT.

  43. Joyce-AnneNo Gravatar

Wow! That’s fantastic! Btw, it’s not unusual to be bigger earlier on in a second pregnancy.

  44. Tara R.No Gravatar

I plumped up fast with my second pregnancy. I think my baby bump was visible by the second month.

That is a fabulous coat, even more fabulous price. I wish we had a store like that near me.

  45. Brittany at Mommy WordsNo Gravatar

The Gap actually has great maternity clothes for pretty decent prices and they come in petites. I LOVE them! Pants – no hem! It is fabulous. They also have some great sweaters and stuff and a lot of them are cute enough to wear in those couple of winter months up there right after the baby is born – not maternityish at all. The Gap Maternity is online but anything can be returned to the store. Old Navy has some inexpensive stuff too! Due January 30th so I am little nervous too!

  46. HeatherNo Gravatar

    LOVE IT!

What a great deal! :) (and that coat is FAB!)

  47. MariposaNo Gravatar

    Amazing! Good job there…

  48. perpstuNo Gravatar

Wow! You scored! That coat is adorable and for $4.00? AMAZING!

  49. Felicia - I Complete MeNo Gravatar

That coat is so cute. I was pregnant during the summer so I didn’t have to worry about coats. Have you heard of Tummy Tankz? I mean a women who has created this new versatile product for pregnant women. It extends your current clothes and can be worn after pregnancy and be used for nursing. I think it’s a great product to buy so you don’t have to spend a fortune on maternity clothes. Even though I’m not pregnant I’m actually considering buy it myself to help with some of my clothes that I have now (so I can wear until I lose the weight to fit in the properly, shhhh). Here is the website, http://www.tummytankz.com/ hopefully this can help cut the price of maternity clothes for you.

  50. melissaNo Gravatar

wow!! seriously? 4 bucks!? i wish we had some sort of garment district here in michigan. i’d probably have to move in there.
    xoxo

  51. MikeNo Gravatar

Way to find a deal. I wish they had one of those here in Southern California. We just have thrift shops and Goodwill…

  52. JientjeNo Gravatar

Oh wow, that is indeed a steal! And I’m sure you’ll look great wearing it!

  53. lceelNo Gravatar

Around here we have Goodwill Stores – I think you have them in and around Boston, as well. Same general idea though – and similar prices.

Glad you found something suitable for Boston winters and pregnant bellies. I would hate to think of you being cold during the winter.

  54. MissyNo Gravatar

I have nearly the same coat in black! Great that you found it :)

  55. AshleyNo Gravatar

oooh that’s cute! I shopped at thrift stores and layered a bunch of stuff. I used tank tops all year round – in the winter, I used them under my other long sleeve tops to make them “longer” and fit over my belly. And, I opened button downs down the front and wore a tank top underneath. That is….until I looked like I was carrying a massive beach ball under my shirt. And then, I had to suck it up and buy maternity shirts.

  56. NicoleNo Gravatar

Can I hop on over for a shopping trip in that shop?
    Please?
    :)

  57. KimNo Gravatar

Ohhhh.. I love finds like that!!!

  58. JennersNo Gravatar

    Wow! Talk about a bargain!!!

  59. katcarneoNo Gravatar

I live in a third world country and shopping in second-hand stores is not at all uncommon. Such stores are called Ukay-Ukay, a play on the Tagalog word Hukay, which means “to dig.” Really, you have to go digging through piles of clothing imported from nearby richer countries. One is bound to find good finds with excellent prices. I’ve got a couple branded clothes myself, which I scored for a fraction of what they might’ve cost in stores.

That’s a lovely coat you got there, Sandy.
