Stages of Adaptation

Day 1 of Preschool:
- Babisodes: *Releases my hand and runs inside classroom*

- Me: (after 45 minutes) Sweetie, mommy and daddy are going to take a walk. We’ll be back soon.

- Babisodes: But,.. can I come?

- Me: Don’t you want to stay here with your new friends?

- Babisodes: Yes, but can, can, can…mommy and daddy stay?

- Me: I promise, we won’t be far, and we’ll be right back. Okay?

- Babisodes: Ooo-kay *hugs*

Day 2 of Preschool:

- Babisodes: *Releases hand and runs inside classroom*

- Me: Okay sweetie. I’ll see you in a few hours. Can you say goodbye to mommy and daddy?

- Babisodes: Can, can, can… mommy and daddy stay for a widdle bit?

- Me: No honey, daddy has to go to work, and I’ll be back soon to pick you up. All right?

- Babisodes: Oh, all right. *hugs*

Day 3 of Preschool:
- Babisodes: *Releases hand and runs inside classroom*

- Me: Okay sweetie. I’ll see you in a few hours. Can you say goodbye to mommy and daddy?

- Babisodes: *single wave from afar*

Disclaimer:
Every child adapts to new experiences and environments at different rates. Some may take several weeks, even months to adjust to new surroundings. And others may have the decency to wean themselves slowly in order to allow time for their parents to catch up.

Hmm…sorry ’bout that. Comment luv has been acting crazy lately :(

  4. OhCaptainNo Gravatar

My experience was OhCountess had a much harder time with the little OhPrincesses going off then they did. OhPrincess2 just started school aged childcare since she starts Kindergarten this fall. OhCountess was worried she’d be really scared and confused by it all. I normally drop the kids off each day…she didn’t even look back when we found her classroom. Nope, she’s not ready ;-)

    lol !!

so true!! :) love this post. and i love that you were spying on them. :) that is the great mom i know you are!! :) i so would do that too. i like to drive around the parking lot at the elementary school and watch the kids and teachers through the window… and when they notice me, I just wave and con’t driving. lol

i hope things are better with the teacher paying attention to the kids and not her cell phone, and also with how you are feeling about it all. :)

I’m glad you got a picture of your spying today :D *lol* Too cute!

It seems that in many cases it’s the parent that adapts slower than the child. Riley took a while to adapt, but it got easier when she was able to get on the bus and leave us from there than for us to drop her off. We’ll see what happens with Angel :)

I hope the transition continues to go ’smooth’ for the both of you!!

Great Photo! I’ve had that feeling so many times.

Sometimes, the adjustment is really hard on the parents. My daughter is going to start preschool in a couple weeks and I think it will be a little tough for her at first, but I have my anxieties too…

    Great post!

I’m glad that she is doing so great!! Just so you know, I would totally spy too. On the days that I would work from home but still send the kids off, I would randomly pop in to school to take a quick look in to see them in their element and to see the teachers in action, when they didn’t know I was watching….. I’m sneaky like that.

At least she’s adjusting so well. I know it’s harder for you, but you should be happy she loves it that much. Keep your chin up mom. The social activity is great for her. And, even if you don’t see it, the recoop time is great for you.

I can’t tell you the number of times my smart-ass teen-aged sons would chant “C’mon Dad. Keep up!” as they adjusted to new and different things way faster than I did. They seemed to take great and perverse pleasure in making me feel like an old fuddy duddy.

    Good for Babisodes!

It takes my son weeks or months to fully adjust to any new preschool/daycare situation, and he’s been doing it since he was six months old. It’s interesting how different they can be, isn’t it?

My CommentLuv didn’t work at all, so I uninstalled it. I don’t know what’s up with that.

But getting back to your POINT… I like how you worded the disclaimer. :)

How are you feeling about things, other than the fact that Babisodes didn’t wean slowly enough for your tastes?

Your lucky, at least you made to day three. With our children, half-day and they were waving from a far. Now I can’t even get them to stay put for dinner. Even the youngest can’t wait to be free from our grasps. But of course when they are sick or when they need something, they are on you like white on rice…

BTW, I will be you one day, sitting a safe distance away, watching him. Admiring him. And, probably pining just a wee bit, for him.
