Stat-ddicted

I am going to be honest.  I may have mentioned it before, but for those who are new, it bears mentioning again for my condition has worsened.

*ahem*

Hi. My name is Sandy. And I’m a blog stat addict.

It all started last year when I signed up for a Feedburner to monitor traffic here on Momisodes.  While navigating through the various incoming visitor information, I noticed a handful of creepy individuals visiting my blog in search of “m.en w.earing pan.ti.es”  and “ki.nky sno.t.”  I assure you, you will find neither of them here.  Links to them may appear on my Google adsense banner (I get the most bizarre links).  If so, please feel free to click away to leave my site, that way Google can pay me an entire $0.01 cent.

I digress.  Months later, my habits took a downturn. Feedburner’s reliability began to waver and I sought new outlets to fulfill my needs.   While visiting new blog friends, I noticed their use of Stat Counter.  So I signed up… just to try it out.   Now I’m finding it absolutely necessary to have both sources of stat crack to satisfy my habit.

I am here today because I clearly need help.  My obsession with stats began with checking them 2-3 times a day.  Now it’s worsened to clicking refresh just about every hour.  Not so much for numbers, but for my fixation on how and why visitors arrive here.

Here are some recent strange, bizarre search terms rallying the creepies here:

- P.anty p.ulling I really funny

- S.exy sitting ladies k.illing men

- C.hesty g.litter sizzle

- T.rash pick.er upper: how has it changed the world

- Gumball machine how do I open plastic capsule (seriously?)

- P.anty hyp.nosis (nearly every day)

- If I put perfume on my p.ants then do p.regnancy tests come n.egative (yikes!)

However, I would like to showcase this one poor visitor who arrived recently in search of “my boyfriend didn’t give me anything for my 30th birthday.”   Sweetheart, you DID find the right place.  And I do hope you found this post. Trust me.  Karma is a bitch, and you have 100% control over his.

Moving on.

Another problem area I need work on is checking recent visitor activity.  Stat counter provides an incredibly detailed list on each visitor.  See below:

StatCounterViewVisitorsDetails

Seems a bit Big Brother-ish don’t you think?   I’m still unsure if the analytics are interesting, or downright scary.  Either way, I cannot even begin to express how difficult it is to look away.

So there you have it.  I’m a stat junkie, and I need help.

Psst. Know of any other stat/tracker/analytic sites out there?

    Woopra.

You can contact the IP computer in an instant message. I did this after someone was on my site for 9 plus hours clicking away every five minutes. It came from a dot gov computer. She wrote me an email one day later.

    I puffy heart woopra.

I’ve been using statcounter for about 9 months and am also fascinated to see details about activity on my web sites. For those who seem to spend hours at a time on my sites, I give them benefit of doubt: I simply review my own computing activity.

Sometimes I click to a site, think it might be interesting, and leave it open on a tab so I can come back to it when I’m not distracted by three other things I want to review. On occasion, I leave my desk and get back to it hours later and find those tabs still parked on sites I mean to review. I suspect a lot of the lingerers have similar browsing habits… though I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that some of your readers adore your stories and spend hours catching up on the ones they’ve missed (it’s one of my fantasies that readers feel this way about my stuff).

Of course, statcounter tells you if someone parked on a single page… in that case, I’m pretty sure that first scenario applies: tabbed browsing has become my “short-term bookmarking” solution.

I gave up following stats. It was making me crazy. I judge my presence in the blogosphere and its worth by the number of comments I get. That’s it. I have one ad on my blog that I’ve never made a penny from and Adsense is there, as well, and I’ve never gotten anything from that, either. But I realized a long time ago it was never about monetizing my blog. Not for me, anyway. It was about finding people I could relate to that might be willing to relate to me. And I have done. People like you. Whom I love a great deal. Who could possibly ask for more?

I am using sitemeter…and ha, I rarely check it! LOL

I have to agree, sometimes it’s weird how people get to our site…however…I have not seen anything like yours…LOL

I am guessing your page rank is really way up now, not even for a word match, it shows your link…which is a good one!

OHmommy- Yikes! Thank you for the referral :)

Daniel- I feel the same way. I often leave tab’s open as well and give people the benefit of the doubt for those things. I certainly don’t mind readers catching up, I would be honored :) But when I see a ton of entries opened and downloaded items from my site, it does worry me a bit.

abunslife- I wasn’t able to get google analytics to pick up on this blog (perhaps its because it’s wordpress?), but I will certainly try Woopra and let you know :)

lceel- Yes, the numbers aren’t so much of an interest as the way people find me, or what they look at on my site.

Mariposa- I have no idea what my page rank is! :) That sounds like another possible dangerous addiction.

Welcome to the club. I hate checking every hour, so I have the numbers right there on the blog so I can just refresh that. I also use google analytics and feedjit to get my instant fix going.

There’s a wordpress plugin called Statrix, that does an excellent job. I find it to be way more accurate than Statcounter.

Well, I know I have been one to open posts in tabs and then get so distracted that it’s not till hours later I realise I left them open, so if there are any from Scotland, it’s probably been me :P

Statcounter sounds interesting… i’d better stay away from it!

Heh heh. Eight hours on your site. People love you.

One of the weirdest searches that brings people to my blog is “sexy seniors.” But that’s because I posted an open-shirt picture of my nephew, a high school grad, and discussed whether senior class pictures were getting a bit racy.

  16. TalinaNo Gravatar

I am on a mac but I use firefox so that was not me. Plus I use the link on my side bar to visit my bloggy buddies… Anywho. I like google analytics but I think I might need to try your stat program. Do you have to upload anything specific to your site?

I use site meter & I probably check mine once weekly. I may have to try stat counter because site meter lacks that one option that you’re talking about (keywords that send people to your blog). I’m satisfied w/site meter, other than that though~you can see entry & exit pages & whatever else people look @ on your blog. Good luck :)

Angela & Solomon- Okay, Statrix and Feedjit. You are all feeding my addiction, hehe :) I’m off to sign up.

MizFit- For reals. Don’t get started if you already haven’t.

Missy wiggins- Yea, I don’t even want to know.

Undercover princess- Oh boy! May the force be with you ;)

Marylin- Hmmm, I don’t recall any from Scotland. But I don’t mind if you stay for hours. Please do. I’ve missed you here.

Average Girl- Ay-yi-yi. Goggle analytics didn’t work for me for some reason :(

Dot- It is a bit scary. Too scary.

Holly at Tropic of Mom- I remember that post!!! LOL, I bet those searching for s.exy s.e.niors weren’t expecting that ;)

Talina- Actually, I’m nearly certain I know who the visitor was (just wanted to cover their IP address and such). For feedburner, you don’t need to have anything on your site (I don’t think). But I find their stats to be a little off for the most part. I use them mainly to monitor and manage subscribership and adsense account. Stat Counter has you put a tiny button on your page. You can see mine on the bottom right corner of my site.

LB- Heheh, do I sense a fellow addict here? ;)

Woopra is really depressing for a Stataddict. Sometimes it goes to zero! And it shows your traffic is coming for Laundry Line Underwear instead of a post you spent hours (OK half-hours) working on.

    Stay away from Woopra.

Like Mariposa (and others) I’ve got SiteMeter on each of my blogs but I never check it … (nor do I check FeedBurner for that matter) … but I do get a weekly summary with numbers in email from Site Meter. Methinks I don’t WANT to know too much about ANY of this actually. I have enough trouble finding time to post and visit others ;–)

So this stats thing sounds “fun” and I just downloaded statrix but then it error’d upon activation and I thought, “Oh maybe that’s because I haven’t upgraded to the newest version.” So then I decided to upgrade and just looked at the instructions. the planet of janet- I do it, too. I suppose I’m stalkerish as well.

    CC- Super heroes? That’s interesting!

Miss- ROFL! I DEF need to check it out then ;)

AJ- Ah, I need to learn how to do that.

Laura- Blog patrol, eh? I’m off to see that one, too!

Veronica- Methinks you may be right.

goinglikesixty- LOL. I’m so familiar with that. Feedburner does that as well. I have mini-heart attacks when I see my subscribers drop to zero.

Grandy- Shoot me an email if you ever want help finding something. Really.

Joyce-Anne- Aww. I’m addicted to reading your comments. So do our addictions cancel each other out?

Lana- LOL :) I’m delighted to have you visit here. Stay as long as you like. Just don’t dig too far into the archives. I was much younger, and awkward then…

Jameil- heheh, sounds like you have a stat addict on your hands as well.

Storyteller- It certainly may be that “ignorance is bliss” in this case :)

dysfunctional mom- Extreme tracking, eh? Another one to check out!

brittany- LOL. Glad I’m not the only one getting intimate with them.

Walking in my sleep- Aww. Definitely good words of advice.

    Tara R. – Really? Wordpress won’t? :(

Kim- I need to just turn off the switch like that.

Cassandra Rae- Hmmm…trouble with Statrix? I haven’t DL’d it yet, but I’ll let you know if I run into the same issue. thanks for the heads up.

Maggies mind- You too with the Woopra?!! All this hoopla about Woopra really has me intrigued. My acct is still pending approval. *stomps foot*

    hi sandy — wild.

i get a kick out of checking out my blog stats, too. i am always surprised to see that sooooo many more people lurk here than actually leave a comment. i love the comments, but i do enjoy seeing also what people like to visit. mine tell me what posts were hit that day, too, and how many times. i think it is so interesting, too. not sure why, but i look all the time, too.

and i have also accidentally pulled up someone’s blog, started to read something and then moved on to something else and forgotten that i still had that open.

remember the silly post i wrote one time about my name is kathleen and i have ADMD? i don’t remember if i said my made up acronym correctly, but i was shooting for ADHD (but the M for me). it is sooo easy to open something and go looking for something else and start to write a comment and then look at a video clip and write a post and then stop and look at your computer and realize that i have 15 things open that i didn’t finish yet. i was meaning to. and a lot of things i do finish, but it is really fun to hop around and pursue multiple interests at the same time, too.

fun post sandy. i can relate to why you look. and i also think it is funny (and sometimes scary/sick) to see some of the weird phrases that people key in to search for something. one this week saddened me a bit because it looked like something a pedifile would write to find little kids. yea, it scared me what they wrote. i don’t want to repeat it here.

but somethings i find so hilarious that people key in to do searches for.

    chow,

so grateful to be mormon’s last blog post..opening a new chapter (forgiveness)
