Sweet and sour

Some days, I feel like the worst mother.

Days when I contemplate why we’re trying so hard to have another child, when the one we already have makes my head want to explode.

Days when I wish my daughter were in preschool…just for a few hours.

Days when the whining, complaining, and tantrums reach a fever pitch, and I wish I could just stomp away, plugging my fingers into my ears.

Days when I wish I could lock myself in my room and have a time out.

Days when I feel like everything is totally unfair.

Days when I wish that everyone would just leave my things alone.  Especially my snacks.

Days when I really have no desire…to share.

“Days when I contemplate why we’re trying so hard to have another child, when the one we already have makes my head want to explode.” I have had the same thoughts lately! Gah!

How funny we both posted photos of chocolates today!

Yum. I think you’re going to make me have to go pop a piece of chocolate before bed.

And, come to think, I really think I DO eat more chocolate now that I’m a Mom than I did previously. . . especially sneaking those m&m’s.

Okay, gotta go get some chocolate.

I think every mother in the universe has those times. I also think that we all have different ages that we relate to more easily. For me, for example, I do much better with kids older than 8, including my own. I was never a toddler person, even though I loved C desperately, I certainly had my share of the moments you describe. Now, I have no issues (or relatively few) with C as a teen, but many of my friends are tearing their hair out at the teen years. It’s all about the perspective and individual.

Oh… and I wouldn’t want to share those, either.

  42. EveNo Gravatar

I still have days like that – grandchildren can do it to you, too. Once upon a time, kids could run and play without constant adult supervision. Now, we can’t let our children out of our sight without fear of reprisal of one sort or another. If the child molesters don’t get them, the social services will. In those dear, bygone days moms had the peace and quiet of the house while the kiddies were occupied elsewhere – now we need to ‘park’ them someplace to get that same respite. It’s not a failing in ourselves to need those few moments of peace. It’s just a bit harder to find these days.

I’m sorry, are we supposed to be willing to share our chocolates?

There are definitely some days that I count down to my oldest daughter’s HS graduation date and subsequent moving off to college days (we’ve got 4 years) and think “that’ll be one down, 2 to go” and others when I wish I could stop time.

  55. Felicia - I Complete MeNo Gravatar

You are not a bad mother. In fact if you didn’t feel this way I would wonder what is wrong. I think most of us moms feel this way but we are afraid to share it in fear that we would be ridiculed. It’s tough being a parent and sometimes you just want to go away. I have days where I just want to be nothing, not a mom, stepmom, wife, friend, co-worker, nothing. I have days where I just want to be. Hang in there and allow yourself to feel your feelings and allow them to go away. It’s when we constantly defer the feelings when it can become a problem.

ME TOO! So many comments all agreeing means we are in good company. Mothers of babies, mothers of toddlers, mothers of teens, mothers of grown children, grandmothers. We all need a break on ocassion — And chocolate DOES help. No sharing required.

Oh Sandy – I have been in the same exact spot…at times it’s really difficult to remain the be-all for your only child 24/7. It took me a while to even realize that it’s AS difficult for HIM/HER as it is for you (hence the whining, complaining and tantrums). It’s funny to think that your child may need a break from you as much as you may need one from him/her, lol, but it’d totally true.

You’re lucky Babisodes doesn’t have her own blog or she’d be on there posting about you with an imaginary picture of her swimming in a chocolate pool :o )

You’re totally allowed to have a time-out yourself. I do it whenever I start losing my cool and I explain to Isobel that I’m having one because I need a few minutes to calm down and decide to act appropriately, just like she get when she has one.

She totally understands it, leaves me alone (you can’t talk to the kid in time-out, after all) and I’d like to think, it’s teaching her that everyone loses their crap and needs to chill out.

You are such an honest mom and commited to your child – of course that does not include sharing chocolate –
no one says you have to share everything
I am the youngest of ten and one of the best things my mother taught me is “life isn’t fair.”

I am rarely disapointed with life due to this lesson and my understanding of this reality !

that being said – having young preschool age children is exhausting and it does get better once you hit age five – believe me !

  76. JennersNo Gravatar

I so relate to this … and I suspect that any mom who tells you they DON’T feel this way is lying! Kids are hard. They require a ton of patience and some days I just don’t have it and I wish I could just hide away. Thanks for putting this out there.

  77. CarolineNo Gravatar

Ha! That is so funny :) We do all have these days…hang in there! As for me? I just take a long hot bath, light a candle, have a glass of wine and smear on the Topricin foot cream for tired and achy feet. Yep, it is all this mama can afford- but it sure feels nice! Wish I could go to a spa and eat chocolates and have my nails done…for now, this will have to suffice!
