A little person in our household is starting to show the early signs of reading.  At first I found it odd, but a nice surprise, since my husband and I are in no way force-feeding literature, letters and/or phonics onto the plate of our three year old.  And we know that her preschool had not begun covering words just yet.

In recent weeks, I’ve mentioned the pitfalls of allowing my daughter to watch children’s TV programming, and how she immediately fell prey to the flashy, sugar induced marketing ploys of children’s products.  Anyhow, since then, we’ve cut down TV time, and instead replaced it with more non-commercial, children’s DVD’s.

Her most recently viewed programs are from Leap Frog (this is not a paid post, but if they’d like to to do so, I’m ).  Her aunt sent her their Letter and a Word Factory DVD’s last year, but Babisodes was terrified of the Leap Frog characters  (something about the frog’s eyes being huge and not blinking).  But now, she loves them. In fact, if she had her way, she would have them in constant rotation on our DVD player until I eventually threw something at the screen to make it stop, but we’re limiting her viewing time.

The DVD’s explain the sounds each letter in the alphabet makes, and then goes on to sounding out the letters to form words.  All of it is done with clever songs, characters and a storyline.  And surprisingly enough, she loves it.  She sings the songs, remembers dialog from between characters.  Even while riding in the car I’ll hear her sounding out letters on department store signs.
