This little piggy has a beef

I rarely use this space to get all up in arms about something.

Well, maybe that one time, or the other.

Whatever.  It is an unusual occurrence.

While I am well aware that parents live busy lives and juggle a multitude of tasks on a daily basis, a parent’s greatest responsibility is the well being of their child(ren).  Or it should be, right?

Recently for us, our greatest concern has been the cold/flu season.  Our efforts for staying healthy have reached far beyond vigilant hand washing, Purell, and cautiously avoiding sick individuals.  In fact, aside from going to preschool, or to the grocery store once a week (without Babisodes), we pretty much stay home.  Even on the weekends. Not only to avoid illness, but also to avoid spending a bunch of money by going out.

But as diligent as we are as parents, I know there is only so much we can do.  Other factors are completely out of our hands.

Factors similar to when we decide to sit behind the wheel.  As much as we trust our driving skills, and follow the rules of the road, there will always be some fool out there too busy LOL-ing or ROTFL-ing to calculate the distance between their front fender and your rear-end. WTF, right?

Apparently, a similar risk applies when dropping a child off at preschool.

Last week it was my turn to volunteer in my daughter’s preschool classroom for the day.  It was a great opportunity for me to get a glimpse at Babisodes interacting with her friends and teachers. However, while doing so, it was quite apparent that a few children should not have been sent to school that day.  As a nurse, I know that a cough can last for weeks. And children are able to run and play with a lingering cough just fine without it being a risk to themselves or others.

However, if your child can barely stand up or complete a sentence without a glazed look washing over their face, they should STAY HOME.  It doesn’t matter if they don’t have a fever anymore.  They need to rest and recover.

I cannot blame anyone but these kids’ parents.

The preschool day is only 2.5 hours long. Full days do not exist.  Therefore, these parents thought it was more important for their child to wander aimlessly around class like coughing zombies, than to keep them home for a few hours.

Now Babisodes, who had not been anywhere but preschool, has a fever of 104F degrees and is coughing to the point of gagging all day and night.  Not to mention, our pediatrician is not responding to our calls because their staff is fielding over 100 calls a day for patients presenting H1N1 flu symptoms.

Patients like us.  But we will never find out if she actually has H1N1, because we can’t actually speak to the doctor.

Instead, we’re getting call backs from a pediatric nurse who cannot diagnose or dispense anything other than advice I already know.

So to those parents who decided their trip to the grocery store, hair salon, or wherever it was they had to be for a few hours that was so damn important their child had to come to school…

I hope it was worth it.

I will be sure to send you our insanely expensive co-pay and bills if our daughter ends up in the E.R.

OnCouchSick

Note:  Our preschool sent out a notice last week to keep all sick children home for a full week if they are sick.  Apparently, not everyone got the memo.

That sucks!! Poor baby. I hope Babisodes feels better soon! And I totally agree – especially with the flu season upon us. Keep your sick kids at home, people!!! Hubby and I work full-time but alternated staying home with Kate for a whole week while she was sick. My parents babysit our kids while we are at work but my sister had just had her baby and there was no way I was going to let that baby get exposed to anything!

THAT SUCKS. I share your disdain here. At our preschool it was kind of a different story because it was full day (so parents were even more unwilling to give up the time) but the fact that your preschool is only a couple of hours long and parents would still send the kids in makes it even worse.

Hope things look up soon. Sending lots of healthy mojo to you all. -Christine

Wow. We got read the riot act by daycare, and they will call you and require you to come get your child, like now. A barely a fever got us kicked out for a week. You had to have a Dr. note to return before the week was up.

Is it frustrating? Sure. Did I really want to spend the last of my time off on something more fun? Absolutely. However, totally worth it to know I wasn’t the one infecting everybody. Hope she feels better soon.

Well said. My son has been home for over 2 weeks now except for a couple of days when we thought all symptoms had disappeared (or so we thought). Although it is hard for us parents – it does not help the child if they are not allowed time to rest and get well. I recently posted ways we can all cope when our kids and our friends kids are sick. Help each other when possible so we can all get through this winter…

My daughter has the same problem with her preschool. The parents are not supposed to send their kids if they are ill. It never fails that some dufus will send there child with a raging fever. I have always wondered what kind of an idiot would do that to their own child. Do they not know that sick children should rest as much as possible? I think the parents should have to come in with their children and that they all should be screened. If the child is sick they should be sent home at the door with their parents. You would have thought with the H1N1 going around, people would be more careful. YOU WOULD THINK! I hope Babisoides feels better soon.

Hugs and wishes for a speedy recovery!

Hubby always gets mad too when sick people show up at work with a cold/ flu / whatever but stay at home for a hangover.

That is my biggest complaint ever.

Wuzzles “Little Girl School” (where she goes 2 times a week) has been sending kids home if they have that glazed over look. Fever or not. And I appreciate that.

I won’t even take my kid out of the house (not even to sit in the car for a drive to the gas station) if she has any sign or symptom of not feeling well. It’s not fair to her, and it’s certainly not fair to anyone she could come in contact with.

Oh, I am soooooooooo with you on this!! One of N’ little friends was sent to school with diarrhea…..and then was out of school for 3-4 days afterwards. Brilliant! If your kid has the runs before school, just keep them home, ok?

I know I could open a big can of whoop-ass on myself, but I get tired of the whole “we have to work” thing. Like the stay-at-home moms among us enjoy rearranging our lives for sick children. It is a hassle to have sick kids. Period.

This is a HUGE bugbear of mine too. The amount of kids who would get sent into nursery while ill when we lived in Dundee was insane. Zack got quite a few illnesses as a result.
Luckily now we’re in a much smaller place, and I haven’t seen one single ill child in his nursery since he started 5 weeks ago. In return when Zack had the beginnings of a bad cold last week I kept him off just to be on the safe side.
I wish more places were like this. It makes *such* a difference.

Pediatricians across the country are getting hammered with H1N1. It may not really be his/her fault that they can’t get back to you. I know it’s a lousy excuse when it’s your child who’s sick, but triage has to be done.

    Hope she feels better soon.

And, yes, I agree with you. I blame the stupid attendance rules. I know this is preschool, but remember, a lot of the moms have kids in higher grades where failure to show up can cause all sorts of problems.

The rules are set up to keep kids in school, not out. Even, unfortunately, during flu pandemics.

Still, some parents should just be lined up and shot.

It’s ALWAYS been a rule in our house that you can’t leave the premises until you have been fever free for 24 hours without meds. That’s the way Annie was raised and it always made sense to me – so that’s the way it’s always been for our kids.

Apparently, some young parents didn’t get the memo (you know, the one about “They’re YOUR kids and you are responsible for their health and welfare”) and there are many things more important than their kids health and/or the health of the kids that their kids interact with.

Now they’ve gotten Babisodes sick!!! If it was me, I’d be standing at the door to the Daycare with a can of Lysol and, after spraying the kids hands, I’d wrap them up like mummies and just lean them up against the wall until their parents came to pick them up. And if the parents gave me any lip, I’d wrap them up, too.

Ah, preschool. We have had similar concerns about our preschool too. And W.W.’s lasts for 4 hours. Sometimes I wonder if parents really understand and observe how sick their child is, or if the business of life just sweeps them on until someone has to point it out to them. I think that’s sad, but also true.

I don’t blame you for your rant. I have spent all my time off with my sick children and some of unpaid time off too boot. They are definitely more important.

I actually got into a bit of a ‘thing’ last week about this with someone at Zoë’s preschool who believed that it was wrong three weeks ago of me to not vaccinate her for the flu because I might be putting her vaccinated child at risk (which I’m still like, huh? about), but then decided to send her child not only to school two days later with a FEVER, but also a running nose, coughing, and sneezing – all because she didn’t have the ‘heart’ to keep her sick kid at home, since they’d already spent the past 36 hours in bed.

And I’m the risky one. OY.

One of the many reasons I quit working in child care was the directors were terrible and never wanted to risk making the parent angry and thus losing their money. Both of my girls had a high fever and cough (that lasted for 2 weeks) and I kept them home probably a day longer than they needed too because I was worried that they would catch something new from a kid that was sent to school sick.

Ugh. There is nothing that makes me more grumpy than people who don’t keep their sick kids at home, even though I KNOW the pull of that desire myself, since it means I have to take a sick day too (and my kids have full-day daycare, which means that a lot of people send their kids sick because all the kids are there because parents work full time). Still, it’s nothing but irresponsible to send a child to school who clearly just needs to sleep. And as a professor, I can say the same thing about older students: they also just try to “push through” and keep coming anyway until they simply break down. This not only makes them even sicker; it also makes the rest of us catch what they have. Having caught H1N1 myself and spent 10 days at home sick, I know it’s really un-fun and super inconvenient. But I also know that it doesn’t do anyone any good to spread the germ love around by traipsing all over creation with a sick kid (or adult) in tow. I totally feel your pain and hope Babisodes gets well soon.

If it’s any consolation at all, our doctors around here are saying NOT to come in to see them with flu-like symptoms at all. They only want to see kids who are seeming to develop complications like pneumonia or sinus infections because all the cases of flu symptoms ARE the flu, and there’s not much they can do except tell you that. (You don’t want the nose-swab test to confirm it; it’s really painful.) I’ve had several friends whose doctors actually told them just to keep the flu patients comfortable, and isolated at home, rather than adding to the exposure by taking them out — even to the doctor. Not that it makes Babisodes feel better. But maybe it will make you slightly less frustrated about not being able to get through to the doctor.

I hope she gets well soon, and that you don’t catch it!

    Poor baby!

I would be completely angry too! I never take my kids out when they are sick and expect others to have the same common courtesy. It’s not fair to have other people endanger your children!

Oh yeah, that totally ticks me off too. My son has a hard enough time breathing at night without being sick thank you very much!
I think people truly do not understand illness and how it spreads or at least I hope so. :(

Last year at our preschool Christmas pageant SEVERAL parents brought children ACTIVELY Suffering thru the stomach virus. They were overheard teaching the children the hand signal for “get me out of here, I’m going to puke!”. SERIOUSLY – SEVERAL parents brought children WITH STOMACH VIRUSES to a church preschool so they could be in the show. And infect lots of other poor preschoolers JUST IN TIME for Christmas. Some people deserve to be shot.

This has been something that has been frustrating me a lot lately too. There has been more than one instance when I’ve dropped off my kids and I’ve seen a child who can barely stand because they are so sick. I get so angry. I just don’t get people sometimes.

My daycare sent the same letter about staying home for a week as well. I guess it’s becoming standard issue.
