To pee or not to pee
I think I’m in denial.
Which is not terribly surprising if you know me or have been reading here for a while.
When I first found out I was pregnant with my daughter four years ago, I took a few pregnancy tests.
Everyday.
For about a month.
And I had them all lined up along my bathroom counter to compare for line consistencies and darkness. I was convinced that every single pink line was a figment of my imagination.
By the time I was six weeks pregnant, I often had to bolt out of the hospital unit at work. The smell of drippy, drainage soaked gauze, vomit and poop did not do any favors my morning sickness. Even the smell of coffee sent me into a fit of dry heaving.
As I stood outside the unit doors panting and looking green about the gills, a nurse practitioner colleague stopped beside me.
“Sandy? Are you okay? You’ve been looking really pale all week. You feeling alright?”
“Uh, yeah. I’m fine. I just need a moment. My stomach just isn’t feeling great.”
“Here, I think I have some Pepto Bismol in my office. I’ll be right back.”
“Oh no! Wait. Really, it’s okay. I can’t (damn).
“Why? You’re not pregnant are you?”
<<crickets>>
*Gasp* “Oh Sandy! Really? Seriously?”
“Um, yeah. I think so.”
“What do you mean you ‘think so’? Have you taken a test?”
“Um, yea. I took a few.”
*whispers* “Really? A few? How many were positive?”
“Thirty-four.”
“That’s it. You’re coming with me.”
With a look of disbelief on her face, the nurse practitioner reached over and swung a wheelchair around from the hallway and demanded I sit down. Moments later I was wheeled behind a curtain inside a tiny exam room.
“Okay Sandy, Dr. So-and-so will be here in a minute, and she will make sure things are clear for you.”
(Note to self: There are stirrups in the room? Wonderful. I totally need all my colleagues familiar with my hoo-ha.)
Moments later, I had an ultrasound wand the size of a turkey baster inside me. And it was not until the tiny, gray pea-sized embryo made it’s way onto the monitor, did the reality of pregnancy set in.
I finally stopped peeing on sticks.
And now that I am pregnant again, I find myself running myself tired in the same cycle. If pregnancy tests were not $18 a box, I’d still be peeing on sticks daily.
Because so far this time around, I do not feel a thing. Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly grateful that I am not wanting to regurgitate everything consumed 24/7. I am relieved that I am not attending to the bodily secretions or excretions of strangers during 12-hour shifts.
That being said, I cannot shake the feeling that something must not be right if I don’t feel any different. Other than feeling a bit sleepy. I know, I know. I’m probably being completely irrational, but the time in between finding out you’re pregnant and the first obstetrical appointment is an eternity! Too much time elapses if you ask me. It’s enough to make a woman like me go broke. Or hostile enough to bust into a labor and delivery unit, demanding a turkey baster wand so that nobody gets hurt.
So rather than risking prison healthcare during this pregnancy, I’ve driven to every local library and yanked all of the pregnancy books I could find off their shelves. Hoping to find some literary evidence that it may be normal not to feel a thing just yet.
Proof that I’m not just crazy…yet.

Notice how I checked out the same book twice? Could it be pregnancy brains?

Ha! I love it. But I totally did that too. And you have to make sure you use DIFFERENT kinds of pregnancy tests, just in case you used more than one of a bad lot.
I wish I had been one of them, but I had a lot of friends who didn’t feel anything when they were first pregnant. Count your blessings, and hopefully it’s not too much longer before you get to get up close and personal with Mister Turkey Baster!!
p.s. – if you can’t wait any longer, come up with a reason that you don’t feel good or don’t feel like everything is right (like, say, run around the block and then freak out because your heart rate is up) and call your OB-GYN – they’ll fit you in early and give you an ultrasound to make sure everything is just fine!
July 30th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
@Rachel- LOL! You are SO right. I had about half a dozen different brands of tests
Oh, and you’re terrible!
July 30th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Ha ha ha! I loved hearing you relate this story in person. It’s really too bad you don’t work in a hospital right now so you could get some immediate feedback.
I’m sure all is well though and I’m so glad you are feeling well through the pregnancy so far! xoxo Christine
July 30th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
I am so happy for you! I feel like an idiot because I totally missed that you were pregnant. After all that trying and heartache you are so deserving. I bet you are having a boy and that’s why all feels different. I have one son and he was completely different from my girls.
July 30th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Hi Sandy! You’re too cute!
Now, I know I’m not the only one who is going to tell you that each pregnancy is different. With my first two, I didnt’ have any morning sickness at all. Just more than normal, and that’s about it. With my last three, I was totally sick.
I know it seems like forever till the first appointment, but I know I always like the “reassurance.” Your appointment will come before you know it..or before you go out and buy another test!! Save that money and invest in some baby clothes! LOL!
July 30th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
My story with getting an extra ultrasound –> I had millions of itchy bumps. They were horrible. They were nothing like I’d ever seen, but my web research (horrible decision) showed that there were a couple of things you could get in early pregnancy that caused lots of itchy bumps and major problems with baby.
Oh yeah, they fit me in. Only for the OB-GYN to say, “Wow – that’s gross”. But he didn’t know what it was or what to do, so you know what he did? Gave me an ultrasound to prove that the baby was just fine.
So it was ALL worth it.
(Which, by the way, the itchy bumps ended up being something akin to Chicken Pox – you only get it once in your life and you are more prone to get it when you’re pregnant. Nice.)
July 30th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
LOL. I did notice that you had tw of the same book…I just figured maybe they were different versins…or a bad case of nerves based n the post
I’m truly thrilled for you and I’ve been thinking of you a lot over the past couple of weeks.
I know the wait is interminable, and I wish they’d made an exception for you
Good luck
July 30th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
I had two very vanilla pregnancies. The only thing that felt different was that I would gag myself while brushing teeth. I was sleepy too.
{{HUGS}}
July 30th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Yes totally! Ack it drives you crazy. Except this week I started getting the sensitive nose, where everything smells bad, terribly bad. And the heartburn. The wait before my appointment feels like forever…
July 30th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@BostonMamas- That’s right. You poor thing. You just had to read through all of this mumbo jumbo after me talking your ear off the other night. You are such a doll!
@WeaselMomma- No worries. It’s not like I was walking around with a huge belly yet
Thank you so much! That’s reassuring to hear your son was different a different experience.
@Alicia- Wow, that’s incredible you didn’t have any of those symptoms until your third!
@Rachel- Yikes! What a story. So glad to hear it didn’t end up affecting your baby. But I would have been very scared, too. Especially after seeking it out on the internet.
@eMILY- That’s good to hear. That’s about all I’ve experienced so far.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
My first two pregnancies were different. My daughter was first and she was a breeze. My son came next and he made me nauseous, fat, and gestationally diabetic.
Maybe it’s just your body reacting differently to making a different gender baby!
My third pregnancy is following in my sons footsteps, making me think it’s another boy!
July 30th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
lol Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but isn’t it normal not to feel anything until your like 6+ weeks? (Of course except for me who started puking the moment of conception and didn’t stop until delivery.) Don’t worry I’m sure you will be hollerin ralph in no time.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Yeah, I didn’t really believe it until the OB found the heartbeat, either…and by that time I was 13 weeks pregnant (I, uh, didn’t start thinking I *might* be prego until I was about 9 – 10 wks along). I thought it too good to be true.
It’s true, Sandy, you ARE pregnant.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Another great book (humor-wise) is The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy!
July 30th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Well, Congrats! I am not sure how I came across your blog, but glad I did so just in time to follow the pregnancy!!!
July 30th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
I can so relate to this. However, I was always too cheap to buy more than one pregnancy test. lol All three of my “babies” were very different pregnancies. With my third, I had to WAIT to get an appointment with my ob/gyn – I had to have missed two periods (or some rule like that). It wasn’t until I saw the little embroyo on the ultrasound that I felt better too.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Too funny but I’m so glad you got a U/S! For the record, I felt completely with each pregnancy and I was paranoid with all of them. Wait, maybe paranoia is a pregnancy symptom too?!
July 30th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
whoops, meant to have the word “different” in there between completely and with….
July 30th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
34? Wow, to think our 5 was excessive!
July 30th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
@Sarah- LOL. Nope they’re the same version. Thank you so much! I’ve been thinking of your family as well.
@Skiplovey- Oh the sensitive nose is awful. I was the same way with my daughter. Maybe you’re having a girl!!! I remember even the slightest hint of coffee and dairy smell drove me nuts! Hope this time before our appts fly by.
@AJ- It’s so amazing how different everyone’s pregnancy is, especially when it comes to the sex of the baby.
@Sassy- The entire time? Say it ain’t so? Ay-yi-yi.
@nancy@ifevolutionworks.com- I actually have that book! I read it with my daughter. It was great, and I really need to dig it out my basement.
@Joyce-Anne- Wow, 2 missed periods? I would lose my mind. There is something about the image on the ultrasound that makes it so much more real.
@Emily- It must be a symptom. I don’t think I’ve ever met a woman who wasn’t.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
You do know that insanity is a side effect of pregnancy…at least according to my husband!
You are totally normal! For a pregnant woman!
July 30th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Is the Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy the same as the Best Friend’s Guide? By (I am doing this from memory) Vicky Iovine? Or somebody Iovine…. perhaps they changed the name for Europe. I just about wet myself reading it (note to self…. remember to tense muscles before laughing…..)
July 30th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Wow, my internet was down for a few weeks and look at what I missed. I can’t believe that I hadn’t gotten to read your posts until now! A belated CONGRATS!!! I am soo happy for you (and dadisodes, and babisodes) Read all the books you want to this is GREAT!!
July 30th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
You have to read The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy (if you haven’t already), it won’t tell you anything you haven’t heard or experienced before, but at least you’ll be laughing instead of stressing! It’s pee-your-pants funny!
July 30th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
@Hockeyman- By the second day of testing, I used more than 5.
@Lauren- Oh great. Well in that case, I really hope that I’m pregnant so that I’m normal
@MRs F with 4- Yes, you’re right. The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy is by Vicki Iovine
@Amanda- So glad your internet is back up and running. Thanks so much.
@annettek- Definitely.
July 30th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. You’re pregnant??? When did this happen? See what taking an 8 week vacation does to a person? I obviously stop reading blogs and keeping up with all the news that’s fit to print! Holy crap. And, congratulations, of course. What a beautiful thing. I don’t know you at all, but my heart leapt for you. Way to go!!!!
Lisa
July 30th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Oh I am SO excited for you! I had no idea! Congratulations!
I can only imagine your worry; I’m sure I’ll be the same way when I start my family!!
July 30th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
i am so, so excited for you…and yes, it is totally normal to feel nothing so early on.
looking forward to following you on this journey!
July 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Another Episode!
Secondly, if I could have peed on that many sticks with all three of my pregnancies and stayed able to make the house payment (dang those things are expensive!), I SO would have. I am the same way.
And lastly, I still have pregnancy brain and its been more than two years. Sigh.
July 30th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I’m so excited for you that you are pregnant. Back when I was having children we didn’t have home preg. test. We had to wait, and wait, and wait and then after two missed periods or sometimes three actually because you were never really quite sure when your last period really was. (okay, I was one of the fertile myrtles who said lets start a family so nine months later I had a baby) And an ultra sound was only used in very rare cases and then it was very experimental and dangerous (we’ve come a long way, baby!)
Now my other good news — Daughter, who was having many of the same problems as you is also pregnant. She went to the doctor earlier this week and called to say she is 9 weeks. I will be a new Grammar in real life and on the internet. I am so excited about both!!
July 30th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! again. Secondly, I had precisely the opposite experience of AJ, which is no real sickness at all with my son (tiredness was my only symptom for a very long time), and then all sorts of serious food aversions and gag reflexes with my daughter. Which just goes to show you that our bodies are basically cracking up behind our backs and keeping us guessing on purpose. It could be worse, though, you could be doing what I did a year ago and taking these tests over and over again every day, even though they always came back negative, because I was sure I was pregnant and the tests were wrong. (They weren’t wrong.) Do you still have a nurse friend who could sneak you in early for an appointment? I, too, think that 10 weeks is an absurdly long time to wait.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Oh, also, forgot to say that everyone I know swears by the Dollar Store tests which only cost, you guessed it, $1. If you’re going to keep taking them, you might as well take cheap ones.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure this means it’s a boy — we save all the trouble for later.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
Oh, I’m glad you have it (and the sequels?) or I would have sent it to you. As for the whole sickness thing – with numbers 1 and two I was still vomiting in the delivery room; number 3 I was just t i r e d (nothing to do with a baby and a toddler, naturally), so I thought – HEY, let’s do this AGAIN. Foolish me….. number 4 was worse than the first two put together.
Mr F has now put a stop to all this foolish baby nonsense. For good.
And I agree with MT – go for the cheap option!
July 30th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
With my second, I starting showing earlier, but don’t remember any morning sickness. They are always a little different. Try to relax and enjoy
July 30th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Congratulations!
Maybe this might make you feel better…
I work on an adult cardiac unit at a hospital very, very close to a dollar store. I’d been having all those same symptoms – very tender breasts, hormonal, food cravings, scent aversions, etc. – for about a week, and I’d wasted about $100 on the brand-name pregnancy tests already, so after work one day, I decided to get some dollar store ones after reading online that they worked just as well. I walk into the store, find the aisle with all the tests, and there were, I don’t know, hundreds of them, all jumbled on top of one another. I grabbed at least ten (I didn’t count). When I got up to the counter, the cashier looked in my basket, saw the gazillion or so pregnancy tests, looked me up and down in my scrubs, and asked me, “You work for a pregnancy clinic or sumthin’?” I was so embarrassed that I just had to nod my head yes and made some lame comment about providing a needed service to the community. HA.
BTW, the dollar store test #5 was the positive result. And I could freely pee on #6, #7, and #8 to confirm ever-darkening lines without fearing bankruptcy
July 30th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
@Lisa- LOL. well, the pregnancy tests say yes I am. And 8 weeks of vacay? Holy crap I would totally forget the blogosphere even existed if I were away that long!
@Heather- Aw, thank you. But I hope you won’t be like me. You are much too sane.
@ Cecily R- Thank you! Isn’t it amazing the things we latch onto for reassurance? And yes, pregnancy brain is no fun.
@Patsy- CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I am so excited for you and your family. I bet you are just overjoyed about having a grandbaby. And I am so glad that it all worked out for your daughter. I can’t wait to hear more on your blog.
@MommyTime- Ugh, unfortunately, I’ve had that experience with the negative pregnancy tests a few times over the past year. I looked at those tests from every angle possible to scrutinize those lines. That’s reassuring your two were so different. I felt that way with my daughter, too. And YES! You are so right. I definitely need to try the $1 store.
@Chris- ROFL!!! I will have to relay that to Dadisodes
@MRs F with 4- Yup, I’ve got it….somewhere. We’re terrible about unpacking from moves. And Wow! That’s terrible your 4th was so tough. Especially since you had 3 to take care of while feeling icky.
@Tara R.- Thank you for mentioning that. I am starting to think that I may be showing early, too. Either that or I’m eating and drinking way too much.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
I didn’t feel anything most of the first trimester. Then, to pay for it, I got the worst nausea, heartburn, swelling, etc the entire rest of my pregnancy. Yeah, it was great.
You’re the first person I’ve ever known who actually got one of those wand ultrasounds. No thanks!
I’m sure everything is fine!
July 30th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Internal ultrasounds are the WORST! When I had one done, they actually had me insert the thing myself…it was not a proud moment…
July 30th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
@Chronicles of Momnia- Thank you so much!
@Kati- So glad that you’re here as well. I look forward to reading your blog.
@Natalie- Wow, 13 weeks? Thank you for the reassurance
@Anne- Wow! That is quite a story. I can’t believe they asked you that! So glad that it all worked out. I definitely need to try the $1 store..
@Cara- Oh no! Okay, I really hope that doesn’t happen. Although I did get heartburn and swell up like a blowfish with my daughter. Yea, the wand is no fun, but I’ll take it now!
@Muthering Heights- I know. They always have me self insert as well. And the lube! Don’t even get me started.
July 30th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Oh gosh! I was the same way with both my kids! Isn’t it funny how we throw ourselves into this role?
July 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
I knew the honeymoon would do the trick!!! I am so happy for you! Both of my pregnancies were different. Relax and enjoy!!
July 30th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Congratulations!! I couldn’t believe how the first few weeks of pregnancy felt just like an impending period for me – nothing more, nothing less. It made the positive HPTs that much more unbelievable! I should have followed your lead and taken a picture to reassure myself that double line was actually there, rather than taking my temperature every morning to see if my BBT was still elevated!
July 30th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
I’m so behind in bloggy world, but THRILLED to hear your news. CONGRATS!!!
Both of my pregnancies have been completely different. I felt great when I was pregnant with Evie — all the way through labor! No sickness or vomitting…
Now, this little guy is another story!
Things are fine, I know it. Just a new life, with it’s own personality…
July 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Hahaha! I noticed that same book twice. I felt nothing with my first baby either. Consider it a blessing!
July 30th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Sandy, you are too funny. Count your blessings that you’re not feeling anything…yet. I’m sure all those wonderful pregnancy discomforts will one day sneak up on you.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Okay, don’t jinx yourself now. I said that I didn’t have any morning sickness early in my pregnancy and then around 9 or 10 weeks along I got smacked big time. It could still just be a little early for all that. ??
Also, I barely had any morning sickness with my boys. I’m just sayin’.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
I just want to reassure you that not feeling a thing is normal. I’m 28 weeks, with my second child, and this time around I didn’t feel any different. No tender boobs, no nausea, no mood swings. Just tired. All. The. Time. Still am.
But then, at 8 weeks? FULL ON MORNING SICKNESS. It lasted until week 16. I thought I was going to die.
Hang in there. I’m sure all is well.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
lol, what a fabulous story! I am sure everything is fine!! Really, I felt a lot of nothing with my second too. *hugs* Can’t wait to hear more as the weeks fly by.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
yeah, that’s clearly pregnancy brain.
July 31st, 2009 at 12:14 am
I’m certainly not an expert, because I have only one daughter, but I have always believed that every pregnancy is different? You’ll be fine.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:01 am
Once I came across some preg tests at the dollar store. Just cracked me up! how accurate can those be. But if you want to keep on trying. Showing off your new talent of making lines by peeing on sticks…
July 31st, 2009 at 1:20 am
Oh boy, I bet you are an expert in driving yourself nuts, no?

Hugs, dear!
July 31st, 2009 at 1:24 am
Hee! Pregnancy brains. I had that, too.
July 31st, 2009 at 2:19 am
take a deep breath… then smile!
July 31st, 2009 at 2:29 am
OMG….I’ve not been here lately, and wow, congrats!
I am so happy for you!!!
July 31st, 2009 at 4:54 am
Sandy!!!!! I’ve been gone for a while and yours is the first blog on my faves list that I checked and I’m so happy ro read this!!! Congratulations —yeah, I’m so late in saying that… I’m very happy for you. All that hardship, the nightmare tests, paid off. I wish you an easy, safe pregnancy and a healthy baby. Hugs from the other side of the world.
July 31st, 2009 at 5:13 am
It’s totally normal. Every pregnancy really is different, sometimes very different.
GOD I am SOOO excited for you!!! =D
July 31st, 2009 at 7:16 am
Maybe you feel so different because you’re having a different sex from the first pregnancy? Hmmmmmmmmmmm
I love love LOVE that what to expect when your expecting book! A must have!
Congrats! Beautiful post!
July 31st, 2009 at 7:34 am
I totally understand how you feel. My second pregnancy was very different than the first. You are not crazy. I love that you checked out the same book twice.
July 31st, 2009 at 8:46 am
Hrm. It might just be time to concoct an interesting story, just so you can get that first appointment early. Not that I would ever advocate lying. Heh.
Congrats!
July 31st, 2009 at 8:53 am
You know, SWMBO used to feel very little when she was pregnant – until she started to show, and then, suddenly, she would look like the business end of a Greyhound Bus and her temper would get a bit short – to the point where I would often find myself protecting my man bits. But I think the temper was more a reaction to the look, rather than the feel. And of course – we had three boys.
July 31st, 2009 at 9:05 am
Susie’s Homemade- It’s true. It’s like your world is suddenly turned upside down.
Dejoni- LOL! It actually happened just a few weeks…after
Emily- Ugh the BBT. I hated doing that. I definitely feel like that. Very much like my period is coming.
SarahHub @ Oakbriar Farm- It’s so great to see you! I’m way behind with reading as well. No worries. That’s so funny your boy and girl were so different. I’m starting to wonder with everyone’s comment about that, if this could be why
Holly at Tropic of Mom- I know, I have no idea how that happened. I didn’t even notice until I put all the books together!
Mama in Suburbia- Yeah, l’m definitely glad nothing much is going on right now in terms of symptoms. I would love for it to last
Kat- Really? Nothing until 9-10 weeks? Oh boy. Okay. I’m not complaining. I definitely don’t want to be jinxing anything! I have no desire for that to come sneaking up on me next month :/
Dana- You too? Okay, my lips are now zipped close. I really don’t want anything to bite me in the butt later.
Alisha- Ah, glad to hear it was similar for you
the planet of janet- LOL. One would hope….that I’m not always that absentminded
Jientje- Thank you
Cookie- You joke, but I am totally thinking about it
Nicole- Why yes. Yes I am!
You’ve clearly been reading here for a while.
Asianmommy- Isn’t it crazy how things suddenly just fall out of your brain?
Carrie Keiser- Will do
Mariposa and Katcarneo- Thanks so much! I know. I’ve been terrible about visiting as well.
Dysfunctional mom- I’m guessing all of yours must have been different too
Thanks so much!
Sheila- From what others are saying here, it certainly sounds like it’s a possibility. And yes, The What to Expect Book has been my favorite of the bunch. Although I read it with my daughter, it’s nice to go through again because they’re the only book that covers a little on 2nd, 3rd, 4th pregnancies. Most of the others are geared toward first timers.
Secret Mom Thoughts- Ah, that’s good to hear
Burgh Baby- LOL! You guys are hilarious..and too clever
Thanks!
July 31st, 2009 at 9:13 am
No worries girl!! The 3 tests we’ve seen should be proof enough.
July 31st, 2009 at 9:55 am
I would worry too…I was so sick my first month or more that if I got pregnant again and didn’t have symptoms…yikes! I’d be worried.
But like others have said, the second baby is said to cause less symptoms in most people.
Hang in there and keep us all updated!
July 31st, 2009 at 10:14 am
I could understand the need of reassurance especially in your case. If it will make you to feel better, I say just pee everyday.
But don’t you know that each child birth and pregnancy, we practically lost our brain cell. So you definitely are pregnant. Let’s hope that you can still remember to wear the right pair of shoes when you go out. Uh.. Not that EVER happen to me.
July 31st, 2009 at 10:40 am
LOL! This reminds me of me so much. In both pregnancies, I took multiple tests using multiple brands. I think I drove my husband crazy.
Both of my pregnancies were polar opposites. I was paranoid during my second pregnancy for that fact alone. I thought every difference meant something wrong.
You did a great job depicting the emotions felt during this time.
July 31st, 2009 at 10:50 am
That’s my least favorite part too, the time between the stick saying so and the doctor saying so. Hang in there, I’m sure your appointment is soon. And that’s pretty funny about checking out the same book!
July 31st, 2009 at 11:10 am
OMG girl 34 tests..lol Congratulations! I’m sure I’ll be in the same boat once we start trying for #2!
Found your site through cyns Good Card post at NapWarden.
July 31st, 2009 at 12:47 pm
They always say that each pregnancy is different. Besides, we’ve seen your tests…you’re pregnant; live it up!
July 31st, 2009 at 1:40 pm
I am a habitual tester. Pregnant or not. If I am pregnant, I’m paranoid the test was wrong. If I’m not pregnant, I’m paranoid that I am! *lol*
With Wuzzle we didn’t even get into the doctor until 13 weeks *eek* So needless to say I had a nice collection of Sticks!! (A few in my purse, under the bed, in the closet, etc, etc!)

I understand that fear of “what if something is wrong.” I still have it and I am 22 weeks along! I had a miscarriage recently, and I think I will always have that fear when I am pregnant. Don’t worry, though. With this baby I am not sick, and I have so much more energy than I did with my other two pregnancies. I worry because I am not sick, but I have seen her move, so I know that she is fine. You will see your little one soon, and then you too will know it is fine. I would say “good luck” but you don’t need any of that, so instead I will say Happy Pregnancy!

I don’t have to remind you that the pregnancy induced nausea, etc usually show up a tad later.
The ultrasound wins. Stop worrying.
July 31st, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Being a guy I really don’t know what your going through, but I’ve watched two wives through three pregnacies and all three were different. Don’t expect to go through what you did the first time.
Just saying….
July 31st, 2009 at 2:51 pm
I can’t even tell you how many tests I took with my second. My husband would joke all the time how I am causing a shortage..
The double book take out.. hysterical.. I am still soo happy for you!!!
July 31st, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Loveya!

Ha!
I “get” what you mean about wanting to make sure. But, in my case I kept looking at a NEGATIVE pregnancy test. (A few months ago, I was starting to worry I was pregnant. I didn’t want to be. I wasn’t.)
July 31st, 2009 at 6:38 pm
You are too cute!!
Congratulations!!
July 31st, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I just wanted to write and say (a little late) congratulations! I have been reading you blog for a while now and funnily my husband and I started trying to get pregnant again around the same time you did. I didn’t have anything near the experience you did but we had some trouble.
I just found out a few weeks ago I was pregnant and thought it was very funny that you were pregnant too. Congratulations again!

Here’s something lovely I discovered: dollar store pregnancy tests! Yes, I’ve bought them and yes, they have worked. It sounds too good to be true but I’m not making this up! Check your local dollar store!
And if you are lucky enough to find a dollar store that sells them, stock up, and take one every day until you get an ultrasound. Seriously Sandy, after all you have been through you deserve a daily dose of reassurance. Your paranoia is not unreasonable!
Good luck and take care!

I’ll tell you what…when I was pregnant with Miss Peach, all I wanted to do was sleep. With The Little Man…I swear I was nauseous the ENTIRE pregnancy. I KNEW he was going to be a boy simply because it was SO different. Look for a boy, that’s all I’m sayin’
July 31st, 2009 at 11:32 pm
How far along are you? I didn’t start getting sick or anything until like a month into my pregnancy and then…yeh. Fun times. Also, if you just need peace of mind, make them draw blood and just watch the count go up. That’s what I made them do to me. Then again, I may just be psychotic
August 1st, 2009 at 12:06 am
Hahahaha! THat’s is totally OK. I was super filled with paranoia with all 4 of my pregnancies.
August 1st, 2009 at 3:58 am
oh my gosh
congratulations – I have been out of it all of July – busy traveling to a sisters wedding … etc…etc
I am so excited for you =
August 1st, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Yea!! You’re havin’ a baby!!!
Don’t worry. Every pregnancy is different. I felt COMPLETELY different with my two.
August 1st, 2009 at 12:41 pm
you’re too funny. if I was pregnant and working in a hospital I’d be using getting an ultrasound all the time… but I hear that not good for the baby.
August 1st, 2009 at 6:40 pm
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Guess I’ll need to open my reader more often to stay on top of things ;–)
Hugs and blessings,

Each pregnancy… well, I’m certain since I’m coming late to the party that you know that each pregnancy can be totally different. When is the OB appt.?
August 1st, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Melissa-Clearly I need to hit up every dollar store in the Boston area
Nap Warden- Wow. Those are rather different pregnancies. I’ll have to keep that in mind.
Ashley- I’m about 6 weeks.
Louann- Wow, with all 4? Okay, that makes me feel better.
Elle- Thank you! I hope the wedding was a success
Mrs4444- That is definitely good to hear.
Kim- I know. Part of me wishes I were still working in a hospital.
Jen of a2eatwrite- My first appt is in almost 2 weeks.
August 1st, 2009 at 9:34 pm
I say if it makes you feel better, just pee on a stick every so often until you get to go to the doctor!
August 1st, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I think this means you’re having a boy. There’s an old wives tale about girls making their mothers sick and boys being perfect angels…..we’ll see. Either way, I am over the moon happy for you!
August 2nd, 2009 at 2:54 am
I know what you are feeling . . . it is this vibe in the pit of your stomach and in your brain that doesn’t WANT to feel anything . . . because then it is real . . . you have wanted this for soooo long and now it IS happening . . . but how could that be after so many negatives?? Am I right? I had that feeling for 2 years straight (and three miscarriages) then I got pregnant with baby girl . . . I didn’t want to feel anything for fear – the fear that it was not real or that something would happen (again) . . . the time will come (in a week or two or maybe three or four), but it will come . . . and then Sandy, you will be glowing with happiness!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 11:46 am
My friend recently had her 2nd baby and she too, experienced the same thing. I guess because you already went through it the first time, you now have more sense of what to expect. Not to say, your body is already prepared for it. She was sickly with her 1st baby and her 2nd, went like a breeze. I’m hoping my 2nd would be like this too. Be well!

I can say with certainty that each pregnancy can feel very different (and I had 2 girls, so I don’t think it’s sex-of-the-baby related). That said, I understand the concern and I know if I were you, I’d have checked out all those books too. I am giggling about the duplicate titles. Did the librarian smirk at you?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Jenners- I’m thinking about it.
Perpstu- That is too funny. I’ve never heard that one before! Thank you
Tiaras & Tantrums- You are SO right. You really said it so well. It really is hard to believe, yet even if we wanted to, we aren’t sure if we should just yet. I know you know this feeling better than most. Thank you so much.
Maricris- Sounds like the 2nd can be a easier for some women. Hope it’s like that way for you too!
Kimberly- That’s interesting your girls were different with each pregnancy. Now that I think of it, I think the librarian did do a double take
August 2nd, 2009 at 8:06 pm
34 pregnancy tests?!?
Wow.
Every pregnancy is different, hon. I know you’ve heard that before. I’m sure everything is fine. Deeeeep breaths.
August 2nd, 2009 at 11:27 pm
I choose to take it as a good sign. I did not feel any different either.. I was lucky enough to not have any morning sickness and aside from my husband tucking me into bed at 7:00 one night… you never would have known I was pregnant in the first tri-mester. It wasn’t until I started showing that the idea of it really set in.. I didn’t “feel” pregnant either. Maybe this means you’ll have a really easy pregnancy!
August 3rd, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Congrats!!!! I’m so happy for you. So so thrilled. When I was pregnant I didn’t feel a thing. I didn’t even know I was pregnant until I saw the ultrasound as well. So not feeling a thing does happen some times. Hubby had the morning sickness and the mood swings, can you say a great pregnancy for me. Once again congrats, I’m beginning to get all teary eyed.
August 4th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Coal Miner’s Granddaughter- I know. Perhaps it was a bit excessive. Maybe.
Sugarplum’s mom- I hope that’s the case!
Felicia- Thank you so much! That’s great you were the same way. Sorry to hear hubby had to endure a sympathy pregnancy.
August 4th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Makes sense to me, that whole being a little nervous thing. I`m like that about a lot of things myself, smaller things, even. Still, I`m thrilled for you, and I think it`s hilarious that you got the same book twice. Also, if I haven`t said it, it was great to meet you!
