Two Timing

We’ve been fairly lucky so far with Babisodes. *knocks on wood*

As far as potty training goes, Dadisodes and I have nothing to complain about.  Sure there were a few weeks when I thought for sure she would be a college Freshman wearing Depends, and I may have bribed her with enough treats to fill a piñata.  But she poop-trained at 18-months and pee-trained well before 3 years.   In the grand scheme of things, we feel rather fortunate it’s all over.

WAIT! Before you run screaming, this post is not all about excrement.   Promise.

Anyhow, Babisodes has always been able to hold her own at night. Literally. In her 3-years of life, she never wet her bed.  Well, minus a few leaks here and there as a baby, when mommy was too incoherent from exhaustion to change a diaper.  So let me rephrase that.  Since she became a toddler, she has been able to hold her bladder through the night…

…until last week.

I mean, it happens, right?  No big deal. It was an accident. However, for her, it was HUGE. I mean catastrophic.  I’m talking loud, blood curdling cries that shook the foundation of our house.

She was already asleep for an hour when it happened.  So I’m guessing the sensation of lying in warm, urine-soaked pants was quite a rude awakening.  But I believe the most upsetting aspect of the scenario for her was getting her precious “blankie” soiled.  Yes, the coveted McNasty blankie she’s been toting around everywhere for 3 years.

Have you met McNasty?  Here, allow me to introduce you…

McNastyBlankie

It was soft and pink.  Now it’s frayed and matted, like a fresh batch of cotton candy that fell into a pile of dirt.  But trust me, it’s been washed.  Over and over and over and over again. It looks so disgusting it’s not  even allowed out of the house anymore.

I had a feeling this day would come.  As a mother I recognized early on the importance of having a back-up plan in case the cherished pink, dirt sponge was ever misplaced.  So I bought another one, an identical one that she flatly refused a year ago because it had not colonized enough bacteria yet.

But through her frantic tears last week, I tried offering it again, a desperate plea for her to go back to sleep rather than waiting through a wash/dry cycle.

Me: Here honey, look!

Babisodes: *sniff, sniff, sniff*  Whaz THIS, mommy? *holds pink blanket in the air with a furrowed brow*

Me: Uh, it’s a blankie, just like your other one.  But this one is softer, see? *holds to her cheek*

Babisodes:  Ooooh…*rubs face full of tears and snot into blanket* Okay mommy. Nite nite.

Tomorrow…. can I haf the other blanket, too? I want bofth.

*Damn*

LOL!! I didn’t see that coming. We have the same problem with a few favorite stuffed animals here except I didn’t have the foresight to buy duplicates.

Thanks for sharing your Silly Monkey Story with us!

oh. i’m sorry. did no one warn you about the double dipping problem?

we did it with pacifiers and my oldest…

who eventually had to sleep with five. two in each hand and one in his mouth.

fortunately, he grew out of that phase. he’d look pretty silly going to work that way today.

My baby has a doggy blanket he called BB and I have to sneak it into the washing machine every couple of weeks. He loves that thing!
Funny that she still tried to get a hold of the old blankie though!

Thanks for a great laugh. My youngest is now 12 yrs old, and we’re long past those days of irrational behavior (I’m also selling national landmarks on ebay). Still, those crazy toddlerisms will seem so sweet once you’ve tasted the insanity of teenisms. I say: etch them into your memory so you can enjoy them later.

My daughter had a similar addiction to a rabbit!!
It had to travel everywhere we went, and it was a disaster when we forgot it! The rabbit was called Ta-ti, I had a blue one

Karen of Sillymonkeez- With most things, we didn’t have an issue. But this blanket…it was a MUST.

planet of janet- Five? LOL! Oh man. I hope you snapped pics of that :)

The Glamorous WAHM- No worries. It’s perfectly normal to be in pull-ups at 3. I tried everything when potty training. I think she pretty much decided on her own when it was time. :(

Missy wiggins- LOL! I have to do the same thing to wash my daughter’s blanket, too :)

Daniel- I hear you. I’m guessing the teenisms aren’t quite as cute.

Talina- When in doubt, buy 2!

Jientje- A blue and red rabbit? I’ve never seen anything like it :) Rabbits are rather cute. I can see why she wanted to take them with her :)

Mojavi at simple things- I know. We’ll all be screwed. :(

  12. AJNo Gravatar

Ahhh, we have the blanket issue too. Only ours is purple. It’s name is “Purple.” Creative, eh?

  13. Karen MEGNo Gravatar

But of course she wants both!

AJ- I hope “purple” is in better shape than ours.

Karen MEG- Oh yes. The stuffed animal clan. We have it. They all take turns keeping her company at night while sleeping. How is it they are able to keep track of every.single.one. I have no idea.

Tara R.- The original has been through over a dozen states, multiple plane, car and train rides, and not to mention…plenty o’dirt.

Sugarplumsmom- Ha! Guess I’m not the only one whose plan foiled :)

Kathyrn- LOL :) Perhaps Babisodes will join their blanket crew as freshmen.

Kmommy- Yea, it def. didn’t work this time.

Hahaha! I just about needed a Depends myself after reading that. I love those pictures. My grandson has a blanket and a bunny that could be twins with her blanket. He brought his bunny to play school for show and tell. He would not bring anything else. He forgot it there. After some frantic phone calls his dad had to go all the way back and get it. Noah was devastated. He could not be talked into the bunny staying at the school for the night.

This had me laughing. When my son was born, my daughter decided she liked his blankie AND hers. It was quite the battle. Grandma ended up cutting both in half and sewing the halves together. Worked perfectly. (’ve actually written a picture book manuscript about it…LOL.) Very cute post, as always, Sandy.

Sandy, can I just say how much I love you?! I did the exact same thing to the same reaction TWICE. I tried to get a different one – one in wash, one with kid & got kid needing two. Then, I got a new set of both of them and the kid likes the “old” ones and hates the “new” ones.

I thought I’d have that problem with my oldest daughter. She loved her stuffed West Highland Terrior. She would sleep with it and carry it around too. My husband bought the same dog just in case it ever went missing, but within a few months she found something else to latch on to. So, needless to say, I lucked out.

Strange that you post this now. My 3 year old has been trained since 20 months (also poop trained first!). She has 2 accidents in 24 hours last week. And she woke up screaming too.

And for doubles, we totally have doubles of Pooh Bear for my son. We used to switch them every week so they’d be equally worn. But then he started chewing off the nose of one of them and we just couldn’t switch them anymore.

And no. He still doesn’t know that “spare Pooh Bear” (yes, his actual name) is currently hiding in the closet.

I am just amazed you found a new blanket exactly like the old one! My son also likes to carry a blanket sometimes.

  33. LanaNo Gravatar

I did the double thing too! My son had (has) a green baby blanket and a matching white one. The green was his favorite, and he affectionately named it “red”. Don’t ask. His white one was a suitable substitute when “red” was MIA or being washed. Whew! My daughter has a little “lovey” rabbit blanket. a small blanket with a rabbit head. It’s called “funny-bunny”. She has a replica and seems to know the difference, but happily accepts “funny-bunny 2″ when need be. I guess I lucked out! I LOVE the side by side picture! WOW! the original sure was/is “loved” well!! LOL!!

kspin- I have no idea. I don’t mind the dirty, muddy clothes, but snuggling up with the nasty blanket is beyond me.

lceel- Aww :( I’m sorry, Lou. Perhaps Annie can give you something else special to snuggle up with ;)

Miss- It really is bizarre. She hates having crumbs on her hands, but the nastified blanket? No probs.

Christine- Oh man. I bet that WAS a nightmar-ish scene. Good thing he was able to go back in time to retrieve it.

Mariposa- LOL! Yea, I did too ;)

genny- Oh that is too funny! Good thinkin on Grandma’s part ;)

Cassandra Rae- Oh no! That’s terrible :(

so grateful to be mormon- Hey Beany! So glad you had a moment to stop by :)

CC- Uh oh. Perhaps this accident thing is going around! “Spare pooh bear”- love it :)

Holly at tropic of mom- I know. I totally lucked out finding it. I ran into on a clearance rack and HAD to buy it.

Lana- You definitely lucked out :) Sounds like they had some sweet lovey’s too.

Kelley- LOL At least you don’t have to wash his computer every week ;)

wright- I hope you never do…

karen- They definitely are. You just never know what they’ll come up with…

This definitely made me giggle. The Little Prince had a blanket that was like that only he had this weird thing where he would bite it and pull the fuzzy stuff out of the blanket when he was that age and I would have lint everywhere when he woke up. He did it in his sleep. Needless to say it’s now threadbare and at his father’s house. He still sleeps with the blasted thing.

Hmmm, reminds me of that F.R.I.E.N.D.S. episode wherein Rachel’s daughter Emma happened to like Joey’s stuffed penguin. Joey bought another one to give to Emma, but the baby didn’t like the new toy.

Joey said to Rachel, “It’s the same!” again and again, but in the end he had to give the old toy to the baby and keep the new one. He then said to it “You’re not the same!”

My nephew has this beloved stuffed something (I still can’t decide whether it’s a dog or an ugly bear) that he’s had since he was a baby (and he’s four now.) He sleeps with it and brings it everywhere, but it looks disgusting and is now in a permanent shade of dirty blue. He wouldn’t part with it.

Good thing your baby took the new blankie. It’s just so funny that she still won’t let go of the old one.
