Two Timing, Gone Wild

*Note- Part of this post is a repost with an update included. If you’ve read this before, skip to the bottom.

We’ve been fairly lucky so far with Babisodes. *knocks on wood*

As far as potty training goes, Dadisodes and I have nothing to complain about.  Sure there were weeks when I thought for sure she would be a college Freshman wearing Depends, and I may have bribed her with enough treats to fill a piñata.  But she poop-trained at 18-months and pee-trained well before 3 years.   In the grand scheme of things, we feel rather fortunate it’s all over.

WAIT! Before you run screaming, this post is not all about excrement.   Promise.

Anyhow, Babisodes has always been able to hold her own at night. Literally. In her 3-years of life, she never wet her bed.  Well, minus a few leaks here and there as a baby, when mommy was too incoherent from exhaustion to change a diaper.  So let me rephrase that.  Since she became a toddler, she has been able to hold her bladder through the night…

…until last week.

I mean, it happens, right?  No big deal. It was an accident. However, for her, it was HUGE. I mean catastrophic.  I’m talking loud, blood curdling cries that shook the foundation of our house.

She was already asleep for an hour when it happened.  So I’m guessing the sensation of lying in warm, urine-soaked pants was quite the rude awakening.  But I believe the most upsetting aspect of the scenario for her was getting her precious “blankie” soiled.  Yes, the coveted McNasty blankie she’s been toting around everywhere for 3 years.

Have you met McNasty?  Here, allow me to introduce you…

McNastyBlankie

It was soft and pink.  Now it’s frayed and matted, like a fresh batch of cotton candy that fell into a pile of dirt.  But trust me, it’s been washed.  Over and over and over and over again.

I had a feeling this day would come.  As a mother I recognized early on the importance of having a back-up plan in case the cherished pink, dirt sponge was ever misplaced.  So I bought another one, an identical one that she flatly refused a year ago because it had not colonized enough bacteria yet.

But through her frantic tears, I tried offering it again, a desperate plea for her to go back to sleep rather than waiting through a wash/dry cycle.

Me: Here honey, look!

Babisodes: *sniff, sniff, sniff*  Whaz THIS, mommy? *holds pink blanket in the air with a furrowed brow*

Me: Uh, it’s a blankie, just like your other one.  But this one is softer, see? *holds to her cheek*

Babisodes: Ooooh…*rubs face full of tears and snot into blanket* Okay mommy. Nite nite.

Tomorrow…. can I haf the other blanket, too? I want bofth.

*Damn*

SideBySideBlankies

*Update!
McNasty and her counterpart have seemingly multiplied. Thanks to several gift packages received in the mail, Babisodes no longer has a bed.  Rather more like a “blanket-top bed.”

Yea, that would be five blankets.  F_I_V_E.  It’s like a bottle of Pepto Bismol exploded in her bed.  Actually, they never look that neat and folded. Here is what they’re really utilized for…

Yea, five blankets and NONE of them are actually allowed to lie on top of her.  She hates having anything cover her.

Note to any family possibly lurking on this blog (because I have a feeling you are). PLEASE stop sending blankets!  Any package received on our doorstep that may possibly contain a blanket, or blanket-like item will be immediately forwarded to the nearest charity location.

Thank you.

ha ha ha! ;-) Monkey sleeps with 2 blankets and 4 large stuffed ‘things’ none of which are allowed to touch him.

Love the note to the family ;-)

If my daughter had her way, the whole world would be pink!
Oddly enough, pink is my least favorite:)
At least she’s got plenty of back up’s for mcNasty!

Too cute! My daughter is the opposite. I have to HIDE blankets. If she sees any, they all go on her bed…then on her. It’s really hard in the summer to wake up to a child sweating so bad she’s crying. What a dork!

Hahaha! Two of my grand sons have their very own McNasty blankies. Sam’s started out a beautiful shade of powder blue and was soft and fuzzy. It is now dirt blue and feels crusty even after it has been washed. He will take no replacement. Noah’s blanket is falling to pieces. Chunks fall off it. He will take no replacement. Nobody else is allowed to touch them. You take your life into your own hands if you try.

OMG…that’s so cute. I remember I used to be the same way when I was little. I hated to be covered up, and I’d kick off my blankets in the middle of the night. Now I know it’s not such a good idea as I wake up to cold and numb body parts. LOL!

It is only this winter that our daughter finally agreed that she can actually be covered. And covered all night. And she will be turning 5 this month. There’s still hope for Babisodes yet!

Well I guess I’ll keep this as a warning, my little Avery is starting to use a blanket to fall asleep. Luckily it doesn’t matter which blanket, but I know he prefers the blankets on mommy’s bed.

When I was little, I think my blankie magically got lost at daycare or in the dryer or something. hate when that happens. Luckily, L’s blankets are way smaller..like 12″x12″ squares, so dragging them happens less often.

Well, I’m glad that you had a backup blankie! I remember my 2nd son had to have all his little blankies at one time. After time, they started to shred and he eventually lost every piece! I could never find blankets like those again, but thank God he just outgrew them!!!

My little brother had a “blankie” that was a simple white flannel one from the hospital when he was born. He toted it around with him for YEARS until one day, while at a friends house, it was mistaken for a rag and thrown away. That was the end of that!

I’m sure the fact that Babisodes are pink will guarantee that they have a longer shelf life than my brother’s blankie did! Still, such a cute story.

I’m laughing out loud and my wife is calling from the kitchen: “What’s so funny?” If I tell her, she’ll roll her eyes and say something like, “Oh, more of that stupid social networking stuff.”

Thanks for the update. My youngest is 12 years old, and we still have a baby blanket or two in the linen closet.

  26. PatsyNo Gravatar

My son-in-law blames me for the pepto-bismol bedroom at his house. Miss A is seriously into pink also. She is in Kinder and her friends have noticed and commented that she only wears pink and always picks pink and that everything is pink except for her two favorite football teams (we start them early here in Texas) the Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. But I imagine she’ll work on getting those changed at the appropriate time. :)

Oh, we’ve gone through those periods of being addicted to beds full of things. Son has a host of stuffed “guys” (monster, teddy, dinosaur, etc) that all have to be present in the bed, and Daughter is working on the accumulations too — so I’m not surprised that Babisodes wanted both blankies. Good luck keeping enough room in the bed for her to sleep too! :)

My 2 year old loves to be tucked in. In fact, she’s been known to call me just to re-tuck her in. All my children seem to love to have a bed full of friends with them. Sometimes there are so many things, I’m actually amazed there’s enough room for them to sleep.

  33. JennersNo Gravatar

Oh that is too cute but the side-by-side photos of the blanket are a bit…how shall I say…disturbing. I feel kind of lucky that my son has never taken to a blanket in that way. All the moms I know whose kids have a blankie face these same problems.

By the way, I am running a giveaway over at my blog if you are interested. The prize is a $20 Target gift card!

Mom to 4 here and have never had a blankie kid, ever. I actually think it is kinda cute, despite the appearance of poor ole McNasty. I did have one who kind of utilized her outtie belly button in the way another child would use their blankie. It was her source of comfort. And woe to any who tried to cover that belly button up with a onsie or one piece bathing suit. Aww, memories.

I was one of those kids that loved blankets. When my mom was pregnant with my little brother, she and my dad were convinced they were having another girl – so she knitted a lovely pink and white blanket. Starting a long string of disappointments, my brother was not in fact a girl. So mom tacked on a few more rows and gave it to me. 24 years later, I’ve still got the blanket. It’s a little faded, but it sits on the couch, ready and waiting for us to curl up and watch movies.
