Will Spank For Tips

How do you know the economy is really in the crapper?

Companies are no longer hiring nurses.

When Dadisodes was laid off in November last year, I dusted off my resume and made some embellishments revisions. By January 1st, it was posted live on all of the major job search websites.

Since then, Dadisodes decided to take the entrepreneur route, and start his own company. Which means two things:

1) No paychecks coming in for a while.
2) I need to find.a.job…fast.

In the past few weeks, my eyes have been peeled to job listings on Craigslist, Monster, Career Builder, newspaper ads, etc. If a position description included the term “nurse,” I submitted my resume. I am not being choosy at this point since I have been out of the nursing field for nearly 2 years.

So far, no takers.

Even a fellow nurse friend of mine in California cannot find a job. And she is more marketable than I am. She has a long work history of working with adults. I don’t. Talking patients were never my thing. They walk and complain talk. So I stuck to infants.

But this time around, I am being open-minded. Call it desperate if you will, but in all honesty, the job boards are empty.

I even signed up to be on local parent email message boards in hopes of finding some babysitting gigs. That’s right pubescent boys and girls, look out! Your B+ grade average will now be rivaling my 7 years of critical care nursing experience. Sorry, but I have a mortgage to pay for, not just black hair dye and eyeliner.

Anyhow, last week there was a shining nanny referral on one of the email message boards that went something like this:

Hello parents,

Jennifer Smith* is a wonderful nanny to our toddler. She cares for our child every morning from 8am-noon.

She is wonderful with your child and has become a member of our family. She is genuine….blah….blah…GREAT….blah…blah….LISTENS…but we no longer need her for 3 days of the week anymore. So please contact her if you are looking for the bestest nanny in the world for your child.

Her email is HOTSEXYLIPSQUEEN@emailprovider.com**

Seriously?

You hired some lady with that email address on her resume? And feel it’s appropriate to share it with hundreds of other parents around Boston?

Hmm.

Perhaps that is precisely what is lacking from my resume and cover letter.

*backspace….backspace….backspace….backspace*

…I would like to learn more about your nursing job opportunities at your facility.  Please feel free to email me at HOTSPANKYNURSE@momisodes.com***

Sincerely,

Sandy, RN

* Not the advertised nanny’s actual name.
** Not the nanny’s actual email address, but it is pretty darn close.
*** Not really what I have on my resume, BUT the email address IS real. Go ahead, I_DARE_YOU.

Dadisodes may have a problem with the job offers you’re gonna get now =)

I think that’s it Momisodes – the spanking thing is a sure-fire way into most fields. I mean, everyone out there needs a good spanking now and then…especially people in the entertainment industry out here in LA. I may try the spanking angle as well when I need to go back to work….which is soon I think. Yikes.

    Good luck with the search…

You do realise that you’re going to get lots of spam to that address, don’t you? Still, you might find a paying gig in there…

    That’s what I’m lacking.
    A nifty, sexy email address.
You will get jobs now a hundred at least.

    WEIRD!!!

My mom has been an RN in the ER for 30 years. She’s looked into relief nursing, is there any of that available by you? I know it’s not full time so there’s no benefits, but the pay at some of the hospitals around here was as much as $70 per hour.

OH my – that this hilarious….some people do not think!!!!

I love your idea…when looking for a job in this terrible economy, the more creative you can be the better!!!! You go Spanky Nurse!!!!!

Last week my hubby’s hi-tech frim (Nortel) went into Bankruptcy Protection – we may be in the same position as you guys sooner than we thought…

    hang in there.

Wow, Sandy, GREAT new look – obviously I’ve been absent for a while.

I’m amazed about the nursing issue – we have a major shortage in MI from what I’ve heard. Maybe it’s a coast thing.

If only you lived a wee bit closer. Lots of nursing jobs to be had in these parts. Maybe even some that will allow spanking. ;-)

Wow, I’m surprised about even nurses having a tough time finding jobs. I guess it really is tough all over. Hopefully something will turn up if you keep at it. It’s amazing the email addresses people will use, isn’t it? Maybe you are onto something… Either way, I love your sense of humor. ;)

I think I’ll run right out and email that nanny!! What in the world?! It really makes the parents look like idiots, not so much the nanny. :) Good luck with the job hunt, I’m sure something will be coming your way!

We NORMAL parents will not be hiring nannies with the name Hot Spanky Nurse. LOL Nor Hot Lips.

Have you checked with any staffing agencies? Murdock Recruiting places a lot of people. I think she mainly deals with PT and stuff, but she may know of something in your area. Shoot me an email and I will give you her contact info.

    Hahaha :)

Well, if you guys want to relocate HERE, there are lots of nursing jobs open. I just looked and there’s actually one left on the Maternity/Child floor (plus a bunch listed on other floors). And, that’s just one hospital! Eh…there ARE only like a few hospitals in this area, but still. :)

  22. AsianmommyNo Gravatar

  25. jennNo Gravatar

    wow. really??

i couldn’t imagine hiring someone with that kind of email… not that it defines who they are, but still, doesn’t it say SOMETHING about them?? WTH?? that is HILARIOUS!!

and I wouldn’t have given the parents that i work for as their Nanny an email address like that either. wow.

I worry about finding work in 7 mnths or so when all three kids are in school… scary. and I also need to be slightly picky and get something with REALLY flexable hours and possible summers off… but I don’t want to work in a school. not really. although i might have to. but i can’t really afford daycare for all three kids for the entire summer, plus i don’t really want them at daycare all summer, I want to do all kinds of fun things with them. :)

anyway… i’m rambling. good luck with work. and good to see you back posting again.

    xoxoxo missed ya!

  26. TalinaNo Gravatar

People are desperate and dumb sometimes huh? Love the email. Hate that the economy is so crappy.

Unfortunately taking what you can get is about all you can do. Looking at industries other than your what you prefer or are trained in is my only obvious suggestion. Babysitting is a good idea, so is a professional email address!

Don’t know about up there, but down here (I work for a hospital, not nursing, accounting) but we are hiring nurses! We are getting ready to open a new little brother hospital of the original one.
It will get better, and as for that daycare ad, really are there people out there that would expect to get business out of that?

Just last week a major hospital company in our area announced layoffs – LAYOFFS – of nurses. Really? Apparently it’s just at some of their facilities and the nurses can apply to other outlying facilities, but last I checked, um, the Valley had a huge need for medical care.
I can’t tell you what’s next. That sounds like just about the bottom. I’ll hope something comes up for you soon!

Hilarious. Totally unrelated, but equally as wtf?!, when I went back to work and was looking for nannies for the girls, one of my favorite applicants return email address was vampirepartygurl@emailprovider.com … I could not believe someone would actually apply for a nanny position with that addy.

Best of luck in your job search…it’s a really tough for so many right now.
